MCGREGOR HAS LANDED MORE PUNCHES ON MAYWEATHER THAN PACQUIAO

PhilBoxing.com

Conor McGregor made a surprising announcement that he wants to return to the ring and face the two top pay-per-view fighters in Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. This is in connection with his scheduled MMA fight against Cowboy Donald Cerrone on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Fans and supporters of the two-division UFC champion compared his performance against Mayweather to that of Pacquiao during his "Fight of the Century" with the undefeated American.

His fans contended that McGregor has a chance against Pacquiao since McGregor connected 111 punches compared to Pacquiao who landed only 81 punches on Mayweather. Not only did McGregor land 30 more punches but he also did it in 10 rounds, two fewer rounds than in Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.

Listed here are the total punches landed by some of Floyd Mayweather’s known opponents. McGregor was ranked above Cotto, Mosley, Berto, Pacquiao, and Marquez who finished their fights, and Hatton and Ortiz who were stopped. Statistics were sourced from SHOstats, COMPUBOX, & BoxRec.

Marcos Maidana landed 221 punches on Mayweather then lost by Majority Decision on May 3, 2014.

Marcos Maidana landed 128 punches when he lost by Unanimous Decision during their rematch on September 13, 2014.

Oscar De La Hoya connected 122 punches when he lost via Majority Decision on May 5, 2007.

Robert Guerrero connected 113 punches and was defeated by Unanimous Decision on May 4, 2013.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez landed 117 punches when Mayweather won by Majority Decision on September 14, 2013.

Conor McGregor landed 111 punches on Mayweather when he lost via TKO on Round 10 on August 26, 2017.

Miguel Cotto connected 105 punches and lost by Unanimous Decision on May 4, 2013.

Shane Mosley connected 92 punches and lost via Unanimous Decision on May 1, 2010.

Andre Berto landed 83 punches and lost via Unanimous Decision on September 12, 2015.

Manny Pacquiao connected 81 punches on Mayweather and lost via Unanimous Decision on May 2, 2015.

Juan Manuel Marquez landed 69 punches and lost via Unanimous Decision on September 19, 2009.

Ricky Hatton connected 63 punches only and was stopped by TKO in Round 10 on December 8, 2007.

Victor Ortiz landed 26 punches only and was stopped by KO in Round 4 on September 17, 2011.

Pacquiao said of Mayweather after the fight that "he’s moving around. It’s not easy to throw punches when he’s moving around so much." He was also reportedly suffering from a shoulder injury.

Mayweather commented on Pacquiao that "as long as I moved on the outside, I was able to stay away from those. He’s a really smart fighter ... My dad wanted me to do more, but I had to take my time. Because Manny Pacquiao is a competitor, and he’s extremely dangerous."

So Pacquiao connected lesser punches most probably because Mayweather found Pacquiao's shots harder than those of McGregor who was an MMA fighter who fought his first professional boxing match. Money kept "running" away from the "extremely dangerous" eight-division world champion. He was very cautious of the Pacman's knockout punch.
