Knicks torch Hawks on 143-120 drubbing

PhilBoxing.com

NEW YORK – Atlanta continued its downward spiral with its fifth consecutive loss as the New York Knicks beat Trae Young and the Hawks 143-120 on Tuesday night at the Madison Square Garden.

Knicks rookie RJ Barrett scored 27 points on 10-for-13 field goal shooting while center Mitchell Robinson and forward Marcus Morris Sr contributed 22 points apiece.

Producing 143 points, the Knicks posted a new team record for most points in regulation since 1980. Since Mike Miller’s designation as interim coach replacing David Fizdale, New York has improved to 3-3 (7-21 overall).

There was a slight delay at the post-game media conference when Atlanta coach Lloyd Pierce took some precious time to speak with his team.

“As expected, a very frustrated room,” Pierce said.

“It is tough when you come off of an effort you have on Sunday against the Lakers and you come here. We couldn’t hit first, we played on our heels, we let a lot of things impact our effort. That is the biggest thing I keep talking about – the competitive spirit. Trying to find that effort. We don’t have it right now.”

It was also a sentimental night for Atlanta veteran and eight-time NBA all-star Vince Carter who played his last game at the Garden in his record-setting 22nd NBA season. He went 4-for-7 from three-point range as he finished with 15 points.

Regarded as one of the game’s greatest dunkers and earning nicknames such as "Vinsanity", "Air Canada" and "Half-Man, Half-Amazing,” Carter was substituted with 45.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter as the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

Three more Knicks were in double figures. Julius Randle chipped in 17 points and 11 rebounds, Bobby Portis had 11 markers while small forward Kevin Knox II added 17.

Atlanta star point guard Trae Young had 42 points and eight assists as the Hawks dropped to 6-22.

The Knicks went 53-for-95 for a 55.8% clip while Atlanta had 45-for-99 for a 45.5% field goal conversion.

The Knicks head to Miami for a Friday game and host Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday, December 21.
