DELGADO WINS WBC REGIONAL TITLE
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 31 Dec 2007
The Philippines' Ariel Delgado has won the WBC Asian Boxing Council super bantamweight title with a stunning third round knockout of defending champion Rachamongkol Sor Pleonchit of Thailand.
Delgado who is handled by former Philippine champion Emil Romano scored his fifth straight victory with one technical draw in his last six fights since losing a fifth round technical decision to Bernabe Concepcion on July 22, 2006. Delgado?s record according to boxrec.com improved to 10-4-1 with 3 knockouts.
The loss to Delgado was the 24 year old Thai champion?s first defeat and he now has a record of 6-1 with 3 knockouts.
Thai boxing writer Damrong Simalajornnboon reported that Delgado ?aggressively hunted the local prospect as soon as then bell rang and rapidly dropped Pleonchit with a sharp left hook in round two.? Delgado was even more aggressive in round three and with a one-sided attack dropped the Thai champion for the full count at 1:42 of the round.
Rachamongkol won the title with a unanimous twelve round decision over Thitichon Singwancha last May 29 and then successfully defended it with an eighth round TKO over Narongnoi Or Muangklang on October 15. He also beat Tanzania?s Obote Ameme by a fifth round TKO last March 16. Ameme is the same fighter who was previously stopped in two rounds by Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista.
While Delgado scored a big win, countrymen Jaime Barcelona ( 30-36-1, 6 KO?s) lost a unanimous six round decision to WBO No.2 super bantamweight Sod Looknongyangtoy (34-2, 14 KO?s) while Richard Laano lost a unanimous six round decision to super flyweight Narindech Sakchatree on the same fight card in Taimuang, Phang Nga in the south of Thailand.
