Porter wants to beat former spar mate Pacquiao in a future bout By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Mon, 11 Mar 2019 After successfully defending his World Boxing Council (WBC) world welterweight title last Saturday, Shawn Porter is looking to land a mega-fight again his former sparring partner and pal, Manny Pacquiao. The 31 year old champion from Akron, Ohio mentioned Pacquiao as one of three fighters that he wanted to face in the ring in his next fight. Pacquiao, alongside Keith Thurman Jr. and Errol Spence Jr. were all named by Porter in an interview with Fox Sports? Inside PBC Boxing. ?I?ll take Keith Thurman all day, he is on my list. Errol Spence is on my list and Manny Pacquiao. The three of those guys are on my list.? All three fighters also hold title belts at 147 pounds like Porter. Porter, who once was hired by Freddie Roach to spar with Pacquiao in 2009, elaborated on a possible fight with the Filipino legend. ?I was once Manny Pacquiao?s sparring partner. We?ve seen that time and time again when a sparring partner comes back and beats the champion that he was once helping to become the champion.? Porter helped the Pacquiao camp prepare for the Miguel Cotto bout ten years ago. They both sparred at the Shape Up Gym in Baguio City in September of 2009. Asked if he?d prefer one fighter or fight over the other, Porter stated that there?s none. ?There is really no order of preference, Keith and I have history. We?ve done this before. (It was) Fight of the year and one of the most exciting fights that anyone had seen in a very long time. On the other side, there?s Errol Spence who is young and the boogeyman of the division. Who am I not to take on the boogeyman.? A unification fight between Thurman and Spence will make a statement fight for Porter, that is if Spence is successful with his title defense next week against Mikey Garcia in Texas. But if Porter wants a bigger purse, a Pacquiao fight can bring him additional compensation from a most likely Pay-Per-View bout compared to a Thurman or Spence fight. Thurman and Porter fought on regular television CBS network while Spence will make his first PPV fight. Pacquiao is a seasoned PPV fighter. His last PPV outing against Adrien Broner in January generated over 400,000 buys. All fighters are signed with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).
