"The Marvelous Captain" Marlon Manalo enters World 9-Ball Open KO stage By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Fri, 14 Dec 2018 Manila, Philippines---"The Marvelous Captain" Marlon Manalo earned spots in the knockout stage of the prestigious 2018 World 9-Ball Championship being held the Al-Attiya Sports Arena of the Al-Arabi Sports Club in Doha, Qatar. The affable cue artist and chairman of Barangay Malamig in Mandaluyong City who is also the "League of the Barangay's president" outclassed Mohammad Alshammari of Kuwait, 7-1, Lee Junho of South Korea, 7-1, Zaid Alsherayti of Syria, 7-5, Ip Tung Pong of Hongkong, 7-4, Toh Lian Han of Singapore, 7-1, and compatriots Roberto Brillantes, 7-1 and Adonis Santos of the Philippines, 7-6, respectively in the group stage qualifying event. His next assignment is Meshaal Al Murdhi of Kuwait. Al Murdhi, meantime defeated Samir Waheed of Kuwait, 7-1, Meneleo Migellano of the Philippines, 7-2, Kwon Hojun of South Korea, 7-1, Saki Kanatlar of Turkey, 7-6, and Nikolaos Malaj of Greece, 7-4, in order. As part of his preparation, Manalo kept himself in shape by practicing daily in his own pool hall in Talumpung, Mandaluyong and famous Star Billiards Center in Grace Village, Quezon City, hosted by long-time sports patron Sebastian "Baste" Chua. "I hope to sustain my winning run here," said Manalo, whose stint is being supported by his long-time benefactors Solar Sports head Ronald Tieng and Mandaluyong City mayor Carmelita ?Menchie? Aguilar Abalos. The winner of the 2018 World 9-ball Championship will receive $30,000. The runner up will receive $15,000. The total prize fund is $200,000. Defeding champion is Carlo Biado of the Philippines who brought down countryman Roland Garcia, 13-5, in the last year's final.
