SPORTS TRIVIA 3: POUND FOR POUND RANKINGS

PhilBoxing.com

Pound for pound is a ranking used in boxing to determine who the better fighters are relative to their respective weights. Since these fighters do not compete directly, choosing the best fighter pound for pound is subjective, and ratings vary from one organization to another.

The ranking may be based on several criteria including "quality of opposition", and other factors like the excitement the fighter brings to the fans or how famous they are. This is an attempt to determine who would win if all those boxers who were ranked were of the same weight category.

The term was used to describe fabled fighters like Benny Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson who were widely considered to be the most legendary fighters of their time to recognize them from the more popular heavyweight champions.

Since 1990, The Ring magazine has maintained a pound for pound ranking of boxers which is the most popular of all the rankings. Other associations and sports website followed.
