MIKEY GARCIA PROVES HE IS ONE OF BOXING'S BEST BY EASILY DEFEATING ADRIEN BRONER

PhilBoxing.com

Brooklyn, New York - When the fight between Mikey Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs) and Adrien Broner (33-2, 24 KOs) was first announced, oddsmakers have Garcia as the overwhelming favorite at 7-1.

As the fight drew closer, bets came pouring in for the Broner, bringing it down to a mere 2-1 for the undefeated Garcia.

When the fight started, the flashy Broner, a former champ of this division and three other weight classes showed that he was the quicker boxer. He started fast, beating Garcia to the punch with his jabs, confirming the sudden interest on his chances by the betting public.

But Garcia was just testing the waters in the first round, he opened up his offense in the 2nd round and threw head and body shots against Broner who suddenly became defensive.

Garcia never ceased and never was the timid fighter he was in the opener. Broner's jabs were silenced early and he became busy defending himself against Garcia's attacks.

The undefeated Garcia who himself is a multi-weight title holder in three divisions, surgically dissected his opponent by pouring in punch after punch against Broner and winning by a lopsided Unanimous Decision with scores of 117-111 and 116-112 (twice) at the Barclays Center in New York.

Garcia was successful with his body attack and used that as a leverage to score upstairs when the opportunity came for him. He snapped Broner's head plenty of times but the flashy boxer from Cincinnati downplayed it by shaking his head after being hit - telling Garcia and the crowd that he is not being hurt by these punches.

Broner, who has now lost his third high profile fight on national television, never showed any urgency despite scores of their bout being flashed in the giant screen above the ring. He showed some life in the 8th and 9th when he hurt Garcia with his right but he never sustained the attack to alter the bout which was witnessed by a crowd of 12,084.

Garcia finished strong to ensure his victory and marked himself as one of the game's best and one of its most talented stars.

"This is definitely one of my best performances ever. I think I controlled the fight in the early rounds and I kept the activity up. [Broner] is a great fighter who has great skills but I was the superior fighter tonight."

Garcia's performance Saturday night showed that he was the superior fighter despite him moving up in weight to face Broner. He threw 783 punches and landed 244 compared to only 400 that his opponent threw all night, Broner was also off target as he only landed 125 of those punches.

"It was a good fight. At the end of the day, I come to fight, I come to win and I put my heart on the line. It was Tom & Jerry, I had to catch the mouse," stated Broner.

"At the end of the day I'm still AB, I'm still about billions, I'm still the "can man," if he wants to rematch in California, we can do it," Broner added.

There will be no need for a rematch.

CHARLO DESTROYS HEILAND

In the co-main event - a World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight title eliminator - Jermall Charlo (25-0, 19 KOs) of Houston, Texas stopped Jorge Sebastian Heiland (29-4-2,16 KOs) within four rounds of another lopsided bout.

Charlo, 27, a former International Boxing Federation (IBF)light middleweight champion and ranked number 2 by the WBC dismantled the number 1 ranked Heiland in easy fashion at the 2:13 mark of the 4th.

Heiland, 30, of Buenos Aires, Argentina who appeared to be nursing an injury to his left knee or leg was never a threat against Charlo. He was easy pickings for the undefeated American who punished him with sharp jabs, hooks and uppercuts from the opening round.

The physician at ringside assessed Heiland's leg after the 2nd round but the Argentinian fighter insisted that he was fit to continue fighting.

Charlo dropped and sent Heiland flying across the ring with a left hook in the fourth, Heiland tried to get up but is unable to maintain his balance prompting Referee Benjy Esteves to halt the fight.

As a result of the contest, the undefeated Charlo is now the mandatory to the WBC title of Gennady Golovkin.

Golovkin will face Saul Alvarez in a mega middleweight showdown in Las Vegas on September 16th but his WBC title will not be at stake for the said bout.

"I?m ready, bring on the biggest names at 16. I?m the real Tommy Hearns. I feel like it?s my turn and I?m going to go get it."
