HORN IS EXTRA MOTIVATED IN PACQUIAO FIGHT By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Tue, 09 May 2017 Jeff Horn was extra motivated in his title fight with the fighting senator Manny Pacquiao with the gold medal victory of another Brisbane-born boxer Joe Goodall at the prestigious Feliks Stamm Tournament in Warsaw, Poland. The 6?4? Goodall outpointed the 6?8? Polish giant Aleksander Stawirej in the finals of the celebrated boxing tourney whose previous winners include world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis. According to The Courier Mail, Horn started sparring with Australian southpaw Liam Paro on Monday. Both Horn and Goodall are teammates under coach Glenn Rushton. * * * The crowd on July 2 at the Suncorp Stadium is expected to fill up the 52,500-seat capacity which will be the biggest boxing event in the Australian continent. It will be more than the 20,000 spectators who witnessed the dull encounter between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. at the T-Mobile Arena last Sunday at Las Vegas, Nevada. Although Brisbane has a subtropical climate, the month of July falls in the middle of the southern hemisphere winter whose temperature will be around 20 degrees Celsius. It will be held at noon or early afternoon to coincide with primetime television slot in the United States on July 1. * * * The Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin middleweight title fight announcement stole the show following the lacklustre Canelo-Chavez mismatch. They stood in front of each other face to face revealing the much-awaited superfight to happen in September 16. "In September, they will see the greatest fight," said Canelo. "The era of Canelo is the best because I fought the best." Golovkin replied: "I'm very excited... we're ready." It means one thing ? that the Canelo-Chavez bout was just a preliminary sparring session for the bigger Canelo-Golovkin fight. * * * Chavez?s trainer Nacho Beristain expected the fight with Canelo to be real tough but he anticipated his boxer to perform better. He said Chavez was afraid to throw punches because Canelo might throw back more punches at him. The Hall of Fame trainer admitted Alvarez to be the better fighter ?It was really negative, everything, totally, we did not win a round. It is not possible to cover the sun with a finger, Canelo Alvarez is simply better technically speaking," Nacho told ESPN Deportes as quoted by Boxing Scene. "I don't blame the fans for being frustrated with his performance, they are quite right in feeling that way, and I feel the same way too, and he must also be frustrated, his father too, everyone.? * * * The Cleveland Cavaliers swept the Toronto Raptors with a 109-102 come-from-behind win with the 1-2 scoring punch of LeBron James and Kyrie Irving and the booming three points of Kyle Korver. The Cavs became the first team to sweep the first and second rounds in consecutive seasons and will face the winner of Washington-Boston series in the Eastern conference finals. Washington Wizards tied its series against the Boston Celtics at 2-2 in a 121-102 victory. Houston Rockets also evened the series at two games apiece with the San Antonio Spurs with a 125-104 win.
