ADONES AGUELO KNOCKS WENCESLAO OUT, RETAINS ABF TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

The whole Maasin City Gym rocked with the people's cheers last night when Maasin boy Adones Aguelo exploded with an avalanche of hits to the body of Rodel Wenceslao causing the Kananga, Leyte native to fall on his knee never to get up and beat the referee's count.

Tony Pesons declared Aguelo winner by knockout at 1:15 of the fifth round and successfully defended his Asian Boxing Federation lightweight title. The Wakee Salud standout overcame height, reach and size disadvantage to shatter Wenceslao's tough barricade as he pressed the challenger to the ropes.

At the onset, Wenceslao landed solid jabs on the head of Aguelo, connecting firm right straights that shook the home favorite. The judges gave round one to Wenceslao as Aguelo was not able to find his range comfortably.

Second round was action-filled when both fighters exchanged flurries trying to outdo each other. Aguelo had the upper hand though when he inflicted the more telling jab-straight combinations.

In the third canto, Wenceslao clinched frequently when Aguelo targetted his weaker torso. But the challenger had the edge when the champion fought on a distance with sturdy stabs causing Aguelo's right cheekbone to swell a bit. The judges awarded Aguelo the third round.

Wenceslao continued to use his right effectively with his longer arms taking a formidable defense but Aguelo kept advancing and trapping him on the ropes as Wenceslao tried to protect his tummy. With his inside track of his opponent's vulnerability, Aguelo won the fourth round.

Both warriors batted each other as Wenceslao refused to give up to the delight of the crowd. The fifth round was action-packed until the titlist pinned the challenger to the ropes with damaging blows to the body. Wenceslao went down on his knee and was counted out and suffered his 13th defeat in 25 fights.

Aguelo wrested his 27th win as against 14 defeats and 2 draws with 19 KOs for a 44% KO rate.

Naris Singwangcha, who went all over from Bangkok, Thailand awarded Aguelo a bonus cash and the belt together with this writer.

"He was a tough opponent," said Aguelo of his rival. "But I found his weakness. I thank everybody for your support."

"We will try to arrange a GAB Philippine championship for Adones," said matchmaker Willie Flores.

In the supporting bouts, Elias Joaquino of Siargao won over Jonathan Ricablanca of Bislig by TKO in the 3rd round.

Ken Jiro Naito of Japan edged Junrey Amora of Bohol by majority decision in a four-rounder.

Jeco Suico of Cebu defeated Junjie Bautista of Bohol by TKO in the second round.

Ten amateur bouts served as preliminaries. The fight was financed by the City Government of Maasin led by Mayor Nikko Mercado in the occasion of the birthday of Gov. Damian Mercado.
