CANELO MAKES STEAK OF BEEFY SMITH, SAYS GOLOVKIN HAS NOT ACCEPTED HIS OFFERS

PhilBoxing.com

Boxing pundits had already predicted a win by Saul "Canelo" Alvarez over Liam "Beefy" Smith, the WBO junior middleweight champion, long before the opening bell. It happened 2:28 in the ninth round after flooring the British fighter three times, just like making a steak out of a beef.

But the fans of more than 50,000 wanted more than what they had witnessed at the AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. The boxing world had been clamoring for Canelo to face Gennady Golovkin, the WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight champion. The Kazakh champion defeated Britain's Kell Brook in London last week to extend his unbeaten record to 36 fights, including 33 KO's.

Alvarez said he is ready to face him but cited financial constraints as the main obstacle. ?I offered Golovkin double, triple the amount to make the fight happen and he still hasn?t answered,? Canelo was quoted by reporters.

Alvarez landed 157 of 422 punches (37.2%) thrown, including 113 of 220 (51.4%) power punches and 44 of 202 (21.8%) jabs. While Smith connected 115 of 403 (28.5%) total punches, with 68 of 208 (32.7%) power shots and 47 of 195 (24.1%) of jabs.

Punch statistics told the story of the fight. Alvarez was so dominant right from the very first round with fast jabs and hard combinations on Smith. Canelo said he was going to give the fans a great fight and succeeded in bringing the championship.

?I started controlling him but in the second round I hurt my hand. I hurt my right hand so I had to use my left more often. I could only use my left sparingly," said Alvarez. ?I felt he was very strong in the beginning. I felt I had to put the body work in so his strength would dwindle, so that?s what I did.?

Alvarez record improved to 48-1-1, 34 KO's with the only defeat to Floyd Mayweather, while Smith suffered his first loss and is now 23-1-1, 13 KO's.

Oscar de la Hoya would want the Canelo-GGG fight to happen September of next year. A strategy perhaps to protect his Mexican fighter or just to increase the revenues of the superfight through a long wait ala Pacquiao-Mayweather.
