Arizona Boxing News & Notes With Don Smith: Top Rank Show, Iron Boy MMA 2, Ramos Shines

PhilBoxing.com

Juan Diaz.

Boxing Fans, Super lightweight Juan ?Baby Bull? Diaz (41-4-20 knockouts) has reeled off six consecutive wins since his loss to Juan Marquez and the former champion hopes a victory over Cesar Vazquez (27-3-16 knockouts) on Saturday August 6 in the convention center of the Casino Del Sol Resort in Tucson will earn him an opportunity for another world title shot. Various injuries forced him to retire a few years back; but the shoulder has healed and the desire to seek another title has returned. The show (main bouts) will be televised coast to coast in the United States by UNIMAS. A spokesperson for the venue said the event was sold out; but, suggested there may be additional tickets made available on day of show. The convention Center has a capacity of 1,300.

The Co-Main is an 8 round contest featuring Shujaa El Amin aka Dion Savage (12-9) vs. ranked light heavyweight Trevor McCumby (22-0-17 knockouts), a 23 year old with mucho power in either hands. Savage has lost 9 of his last 12 decisions; so if you can find a one eyed bookie with a drinking problem, bet the farm on McCumby. Trevor is the real deal and he deserves a better opponent; however NFL fans pint out that ?on any given Sunday?- keep in mind the fight is on Saturday and the sport is boxing. Manny Siaca (25-8-20 knockouts) was previously listed to fight McCumby and the rationale behind the change is unknown. The 40 year old Siaca is best known as a middleweight competitor.
There are some caveats on the card and we suggest fans arrive early to catch the debuts of super middleweight Albert Alvarez (Sells, Arizona) and Tucson super bantamweight Mike Martinez; both young fighters are considered prospects.

In addition, Russian light heavyweight Egor Mekhontsev (11-0-7 knockouts) makes his Arizona debut against Alexander Johnson 16-4-7 and underrated Alfonso Olvera (7-2) takes on Phoenician Jose Maruffo (9-4-2) in a 6 rounder that suggests war.

In other Casino Del Sol card action, Tucson?s Jensen Ramirez (5-2-2) returns tl the ring after a long absence to fight Gerardo Avila (3-9-2) in a 4 round super lightweight tiff. Unless ring rust has eroded his skills, the 24 year old Ramirez is entertaining to watch. Doors open at 5 PM. 1st bout at 6 PM and main event is set for 8 PM; good luck with finding tickets.

Boxing News: 112 lb. Adrian Servin has pivoted on his decision to pursue a career as a Muay Thai fighter and will make his boxing debut on the Iron Boy 35 Card on September 3 at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. Servin represented Arizona in the Olympic box-offs; but left the tournament disillusioned after losing a controversial decision in the double elimination event?..Keenan Carbajal has been added to the Fight Hard Show at the Legends Event Center in Phoenix on August 26? Keenan posted the news n face book and Fight Hard confirmed?. .Boxing coach Juan Mendoza & his boxing prot?g? Fernando Martinez were unable accept their 2015 coaching and boxing honors (plaques) held for them at the 7/23 Greenfield Elementary School smoker event. I talked to Coach Mendoza who said the tandem was out of town at the time of the prestigious presentation and Coach Mendoza asked Arizona Boxing News & Notes to convey their immense pride and gratitude for the selections. ?Arizona welterweight Abel Ramos has a tentative date in November to fight Ivan Baranchyk (11-0-10 knockouts) on Showtime; don?t miss it!

Investigation Concluded: The state of New York (Office of the Inspector General) has concluded that the New York State Athletic Commission doesn?t to fulfill its responsibilities in regulating boxing in New York State. The investigation comes after Heavyweight boxer Magomed Abdusalamov sustained a brain injury during a 10 round boxing match against Ismail Perez at Madison Square Garden on November 2, 2013. It is our hope that the Arizona Boxing/MMA Commission will read the detailed report and draw logical conclusions from the Inspector General?s findings.

More News: The location of the weigh-in for the Friday August 5 Iron Boy MMA 2 show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix will not be disclosed until Monday August 1; check the website for further details. As for the current bout sheet listing, keep scrolling down the column?. Sorry to hear, Canadian welterweight Janks Trotter (10-2-1-10 knockouts) is on the DL after falling through a collapsing rood while attempting to repair a damaged area late at night. The injury required 25 stitches to sew up a knee and he is expected to remain inactive until late October; we wish him a speedy recovery??.also, on the mend in Arizona boxing circles is super bantamweight Paul Romero (7-0-1) who is still recovering from a nagging elbow injury and ?Ziggy? may be out of action until November of this year?.Emily Pandelakis, Hitz Boxing press envoy, forwarded results from the Horseshoe Hammond Casino Boxing Show (outside of Chicago) and headlining Welterweight Ed ?Bad Boy? Brown (18-0-15 knockouts) continued his winning ways with a UD victory over Gilbert Vargas in a six round skirmish. Other winners scoring ringers at the ?Horseshoe ?boxing show was KO victor Shawndell Winters, TKO winner David Estrada, super lightweight Jose Arambula and heavyweight Raphael Murphy- a complete view of all of the event results can be found on the Hitz Boxing website.

Iron Boy 35: The next Iron Boy (#35) boxing show at the Celebrity Theatre is scheduled for September 3 and the slated headliner is Jose Zepeda (25-1-21 knockouts) whose lone loss was absorbed in 2015 to WBO super lightweight champion Terry Flanagan. Zepeda, a legitimate contender with power, would love another shot at Flanagan; but, first he will face Emmanuel Taylor (19-4-0-13 knockouts) and his bout will be preceded by the co-main featuring 22 year old Phoenix featherweight Carlos Castro (15-0-6 knockouts) who wage battle with Jorge Diaz (18-4-1- 10 knockouts) reportedly has signed with Zander boxing promotions. Zander has also shown interest in Arizona?s Francisco C. De Vaca (NABF junior super bantamweight title holder) and a deal could be culminated soon. De Vaca (15-0-5 knockouts) is on the card waiting for an opponent to be named.

The two advertised marquee bouts on the Celebrity Card (Main & Co-Main) appear to be quality and wise matchmaking choices decided by bout maker Mike Sanchez who has heard both cheers and jeers from fans and scribes as a result of his efforts over the years. After working 34 cards with Iron Boy Promotions and dealing with other promoters from around the world, Sanchez has mastered his craft and the boxing world acknowledges his contributions as a manager, trainer, matchmaker and USA Boxing Arizona official.

Zepeda vs. Taylor is intriguing. Taylor went the distance with Adrien Broner in 2014 and has never been knocked out. In the Co-Main, Castro has never faced anyone with Diaz?s pedigree and the September 3 matchup will definitely be considered a ?career crossroad? fight for the 22 year old Castro who has been criticized for his choice of previous ring foes as a professional; if he passes his upcoming ring test, a title shot may be within his grasp.

Other fighters linked to the Iron Boy card include: super bantamweight Daron ?Sweet Tay? Williams (4-0) vs. Israel Valdez 2-0, super bantamweight Edgar Ortiz (1-1) vs. Rafael Rivera (2-9), super featherweight Jose Canez (debut) vs. Jesus Ibarra (1-1), flyweight Luis Espinoza (4-0) vs. TBA. Espinoza was off in his last bout due to a concealed injury suffered during training; the 19 year old is healthy, once again according to Team Espinoza.

20 year old bantamweight Ryan Riddell (Hook City Boxing in Mesa, Arizona) was electric in his last bout; his next foe is yet unnamed. Eben Vargas, Chris Scala and Adrian Servin make their debuts on the card and all three young pugilists are considered prime time pro prospects from Arizona. Tickets for the show are currently on sale at the Celebrity box-office and online. Doors open at 5 PM and 1st bout takes center ring at 6 PM. If the current bout sheet doesn?t undergo a major facelift, it looks like a winner.

Tourney Recap: 15 year old Jesus Ramos (Ramos Boxing) delivered a dominant and head turning performance in his victory over New Mexico?s Jamie Jamez (House of Pain Boxing) on Saturday July 23 at an amateur tourney held at Greenfield Elementary School in Phoenix. As a result; the affable Arizona teenager received a trophy for his win and a second piece of hardware denoting his selection as best fighter of the event. In the last bout of the day, Ramos teammate Chris Sullivan scored a mild upset when he outpointed highly regarded Myron Bridges (unattached) in an ?open? contest that produced a standing ovation from the appreciative spectators.

Ramos trained by his father and cheered on by his vociferous mother, hopes to represent U.S.A. in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics while Sullivan plans to end his amateur status soon and start earning a paycheck from boxing.

In total, the tourney presented 22 bouts and IronGloves Boxing was awarded ?Team Trophy? honors edging out Rodriguez Boxing. As customary, we are proud to list the names of the other first place finishers: Ronaldo Plata (El Martillo Boxing), Juan Ramirez (Rodriguez Boxing), Joel Marquez (Rodriguez Boxing), Sebastian Valenzuela (Madison Boxing), Jalen Rodgers (IronGloves Boxing), Reina Ruiz (Campiones Boxing), Paolo Krumrey (IronGloves Boxing), Nicholas Perez (Globe Boxing), Ryan Ecudero (Sammy Burke Youth Boxing), Hugo Ruiz (Peraza Boxing) , Ramos Adolfo (Rodriguez B.E.P.), Jeremiah Teran (Broadway Boxing), Melvin Hernandez (Guadalupe Boxing), Mario Ruiz Jr. (Campiones Boxing), Christopher Romero (IronGloves Boxing), Danny Barrios-Flores (Peraza Boxing), Antwon Brown (Peraza Boxing), Xavier Armijo (Strong Enough Boxing), Jeffery Lawton (Power Boxing) and Luis Ruiz (Rodriguez Boxing). It was a great day for boxing and Arizona Boxing News & Notes would like to thank host Ricky Ricardo (Madison Boxing) and everyone who made the event possible.

Iron Boy MMA 2: The official weigh-in for Iron Boy?s MMA 2 show has been moved to El Tataki Sushi Bar & Grill (5 PM) at 6922 E. 95th Avenue adjacent to the Westgate shopping Mall in Glendale Arizona on Thursday, August 4. Directions to the popular eatery are available by calling 623-877-9575. The show will feature 10 pro/am bouts held at the Celebrity Theatre on Friday August 5 with first bout commencing at 7 PM. I attended the first MMA show produced by Iron Boy and was very impressed with the pace and the performances. The main event features Phoenix?s Reyes Cortez vs. Joey Trevino fighting out f Colorado; at stake, 135 lb. championship. Tickets are available at the Celebrity Theatre Box-office in Phoenix: $29.00-$39.00-$54.00.

Mail Bag Questions: Benny Acuna asks about the value of using a Sauna Suit to shed pounds, a method used by some boxers who need to lose a pinch or two. Our research led us to believe the wearing of the top or bottom half of the suit can be beneficial; but wearers should be aware of a major side effect: dehydration which can lead to strokes. Buyers and users are advised to use sparingly and hydrate after wearing garment for any length of time beyond 30 minutes?..Felicia Rodriguez wants to know the latest news on the reported Cliff Jordan suspension for skipping his scheduled bout on the last Iron Boy card. We have been told by an associate of Jordan?s that he is not suspended even though we received an email from the commission stating that he was. We are glad to hear that Jordan isn?t currently on suspension and was offered a fight on the September 3 Iron Boy Card; but the weight limit was an issue. Jordan and his fianc? must be elated upon hearing the news; all is well that?s ends well!......Irene Pappas wants to know if Edgar Brito and Emilio Garcia are still under contract with Iron Boy Promotions and according to a IBP spokesperson, they are still connected with Iron Boy? Garcia works for Chase Bank; so, I wouldn?t bank on his return to boxing?..Jorge Rodriguez is curious about the impending fate of Arizona boxing mentor Damien Stone? He faces a Maricopa County Superior Court judge on Wednesday August 3 for sentencing. Stone was arrested more than 2 years ago on charges of soliciting sexual favors from an undercover female police officer and resisting arrest; he has plead guilty and could face jail time or probation. He was a member of USA Boxing Arizona until pressure from the boxing community accelerated his departure.

Fight Hard News: Fight Hard Promotions will present boxing at the Legends Event Center On Friday August 26 with an assist from Roy Jones Jr. Promotions. RJJ has 3 fighters on the pro/am card: light heavyweight Adrian Taylor (pro debut), middleweight Rolando Garza (9-0) and bantamweight Max Ornelas (3-0). Taylor and Ornelas await matchups while Garza will go toe to toe with popular Phoenix pugilist Joey ?The Boxer? Ruelas (10-2-1). The headliner bout features welterweight Abel Ramos (16-1-2) from Casa Grande Arizona in an ABO 8 round title bout. The ring girls will be deployed on August 26 by Budweiser. Iron Boy has exclusive rights to the Tecate ring girls and this corner won?t enter the debate on which team possesses the best strut.

Here are additional card tidbits we can pass on: Devon De La Hoya, Ariel Arismendez, Fernando Martinez and Zeus Pinder are set for the amateur side of the bout sheet while highly regarded Alexis Zazueta (9-0) makes his long anticipated Arizona return. The undercard will also feature Edgar Brito (3-2-1) in a 4 round contest against fellow Phoenix boxer Edward Ceballos (4-1) in what could be a memorable bout. Ralph Velez Jr. is the official announcer for the event. Tickets for the event priced at $35.00 & $55.00 are available at the Legend Events Center box-office (4240 W. Camelback Road in Phoenix) and Rigo?s Auto Sales on Van Buren in Phoenix. We look forward to watching the show.

Good News For Phoenix Fans: For years, the Valley Metro Phoenix Transit System, has angered non driving Valley residents by not providing a commuter system that will allow members of the Phoenix community an equal opportunity to attend late night sports and entertainment events. This inexcusable and age old predicament should change when the commuter system extends its operating hours beyond midnight in October of this year.

A formal decision and announcement will be made sometime in August. If executed properly, the plan will create additional jobs and add much needed money to an economy that desperately needs a cash infusion. It is an untapped and ripe market that will pay dividends if maximized to the fullest.

In addition, there are reportedly discussions underway to extend bus routes to all Cactus League Spring Training game venues that are currently inaccessible to most bus riders. Arizona Boxing News & Notes became aware of the ?commuter blues? dilemma years ago after multiple comments hit our mailbag from rabid sports fans indicating they were a forgotten audience.

The sad truth, most bus routes end their last run around 9:45 PM, 1-2 hours before most after dark held entertainment and sports events end. We thank the city for finally addressing the issue and hope residents take advantage of what they asked for; after all, inclusion is better than exclusion?..Until Next Time!
