Ganigan Lopez frustrates Jonathan Taconing to retain WBC Light Flyweight belt By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 03 Jul 2016 Reigning World Boxing Council Light Flyweight champion Ganigan ?El Maravilla? Lopez of Mexico retained his title belt against his relentless Number 1 contender in Jonathan Taconing of the Philippines. Lopez earned a Unanimous Decision nod on all three officials at ringside at the Arena Coliseo in Mexico City in his title defense Saturday night against his visiting opponent. The Mexican champion was triumphant with scores of 115-112, 118-109 and 119-108 against the foremost challenger to his crown. The taller champion utilized his physical abilities to the fullest against the shorter Taconing. He used his longer reach to effectively jab his relentless challenger in the span of 12 hard-fought rounds. Taconing pursued the taller Lopez from the opening bell and attempted to pin him in the ropes and the corner where he can unload his overhand left. He hurt Lopez in the 2nd and actively targeted his opponent?s body. But Lopez boxed beautifully in most of the rounds. His jabs were on point and frustrated Taconing who cannot find a way to penetrate his opponent?s long arms. He also moved well, timely ducking and moving backwards as Taconing threw his big left. Taconing was deducted a point in Round 8 due to a head butt that produced a cut on the right eye of Lopez. Referee Thomas Taylor earlier warned the Filipino about the infraction in the 3rd and decided to cut a point off the Filipino after the incident. Lopez?s right eye bled after the head clash but it was successfully mended by his cutman during the break. The Filipino warrior went for broke in the final round, pursuing his opponent with the intent to knock him to the canvass but Lopez was smart not to make the mistake of exchanging against a hard-hitting opponent- knowing that he is ahead in the cards. Lopez improved to 28-6 (17 KOs) after his win while Taconing earned his 3rd loss against 22 wins (18 KOs) and a draw. You can reach the author at rrmaze24@aol.com.
