QUESTIONABLE DECISION ENDS NESTHY PETECIO?S OLYMPIC DREAM
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 22 May 2016
A highly questionable decision at the AIBA World Women?s Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan has ended sixth seeded flyweight Nesthy Petecio?s dream of making it to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro when she lost by a split decision to Morocco?s Zohra Ez Zahraoui on the third day of competition on Saturday night.
Petecio who earned a bye in the first round was beaten by Zahraoui who had won her opening bout against South Korea?s Nam Eunjin.
Petecio, regarded as the best bet for an Olympic berth by the coaching staff as well as ABAP executive director Ed Picson was a clear 40-35 winner on the scorecard of judge Thomas Riebe of Germany but the two other judges, Armando Villa of Venezuela and Moise Mbemap of Cameroon who is apparently now an Australian, scored the fight an even 38-38 for the girl from Morocco.
Under the tournament rules a draw has to be broken by the judges, both of whom picked the Moroccan fighter Zohra Ez Zahraoui in a decision that stunned the Philippine delegation and many of the fans who felt the lopsided 40-35 score by one judge including a 10-8 margin in the third round indicated Petecio?s dominance.
However, the 2014 AIBA World silver medalist lost out in the final reckoning, ruining her chances of making it to Rio.
If it was any consolation junior flyweight Josie Gabuco defeated Bulgaria?s Sevda Asenova by a split decision to advance to the next round against tough Volha Lushchyk of Belarus on Sunday after Irish Magno dropped out with a loss to Bolortuul Tumurkhuyag of Mongolia last Friday.
