DELA TORRE TO FINALLY MAKE U.S. DEBUT AGAINST MEDIOCRE OPPONENT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 16 May 2016 DeLa Torre. Reigning World Boxing Federation (WBF) world super featherweight champion Harmonito "Hammer" dela Torre of General Santos City will finally make his long-delayed debut in the United States on May 28 (Manila time) against Guillermo Sanchez who must be regarded as a mediocre opponent with a record of 15-18-1 with 6 knockouts according to boxrec.com. Dela Torre?s manager and youthful head of Sanman Promotions Jim Claude Mananquil based in General Santos City announced that Dela Torre will face Sanchez who is from Puerto Rico but fights out of Buffalo, New York in an eight round bout at the Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino, Niagara Falls in New York. The lanky 5?8? Dela Torre is unbeaten in 17 fights with 12 knockouts while the southpaw Sanchez who stands one inch taller at 5?9? may have a forgettable record but has the distinction of having fought Adrien Broner, the current WBA super lightweight champion on September 4, 2010 where he lost by a 2nd round TKO in a scheduled ten round bout. The 22 year old Dela Torre, a former WBF International and Philippine Boxing Federtion (PBF) super featherweight champion said ?I am very happy and excited that my fight in the US will finally push through.? Dela Torre was scheduled to face Wanzell ?Venom? Ellison of New Jersey, USA last Oct. 23 at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona, but the late release of his visa resulted in the cancellation of the fight. Ellison from New Jersey has a record of 11- 1-1 with 5 knockouts. Mananquil said ?We would like to thank Greg Cohen and Adam Wilcock for giving him (Dela Torre) another chance to fight in the USA." In his last fight on November 14, 2015 Dela Torre won by a 2nd round TKO over Richard Betos in a scheduled eight round bout after beating veteran Eusebio Baluarte by a 4th round TKO in a scheduled ten round bout on June 7 , 2015. The fight against Betos was a tune-up after Dela Torres? planned bout in the US was called off. Dela Torre has been training early for his US debut since early this year. In fact, Manangquil hired Ernie Sanchez (15W-7L-1D) of Highland Stable as one of Dela Torre?s sparring partners at the Sanman Gym in General Santos City. Mananquil said Dela Torre, who has won his last seven fights all by KO, also spars with stable-mate Adam Diu ?Big Daddy? Abdulhamid, a southpaw with a record of 9-2 with 4 knockouts. Dela Torre won the vacant WBF world super featherweight title by knocking out Isack Junior of Indonesia in the 4th round at the Lagao Gym Gensan on Sept. 13, 2014. He also fought twice and won both of them against two Indonesian fighters at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort in Macao. Dela Torre first knocked out Jason Butar Butar on November 24, 2013 then stopped Yakobus Heluka on February 22, 2014. The 27-year old Sanchez, on the other hand, previously suffered a 2nd round TKO against 34-year old Demond Brock, the current WBC-USNBC lightweight champion last March 20 in New Jersey. The 5-foot-9 Sanchez last won by a first round KO over Pablo Batres on February 20, 2015 at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona in New York.
