PACQUIAO VOWS ALL OUT SUPPORT TO PH SPORTS

PhilBoxing.com

Stressing the important role sports play in building a physically strong and healthy citizenry, fighting Sarangani congressman and senatorial bet Manny Pacquiao vowed support all efforts towards that end should he be elected as member of the Upper chamber.

In an interview before attending his party's miting de avance last Saturday, the Filipino ring hero who imprinted the country' name in the international sporting map by becoming the only man in the history of sweet science to win world belts in eight weight divisions, assured this writer plans for the purpose have already been in place.

First and foremost, according to attain the goal, according to the three-time 'Fighter of the Year' and reigning 'Fighter of the Decade,' is to establish a cabinet-level Department of Sports similar to Department of Education to replace the Philippine Sport Commission, the current government's arm in sports development.

"The reason is simple," the Pambansang Kamao explained."The DepEd, which is tasked with building mentally capable members of our society, is a cabinet-level branch of the government. In the same manner, the PSC also needs to be in that same level, being the agency in charge of producing physically able and healthy Filipinos."

"I'll expound on the mechanics of this scheme a the right time later," Pacquiao said. "At the moment, first things first. Kailangan muna nating palakasin ang pagpapatupad ng programa tungkol sa kinabukasan ng ating mga pambansang atleta sa ilalim ng Rep. Act 9064."

The Pacman was referring to the "National Athletes, Coaches and Trainers Benefits And Incentives Law Of 2001," an Act principally authored by local basketball's 'living legend' and former Senator Robert "Sonny" Jaworski which was signed ino law by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2001.

"Fifteen years after its enactment, the law is yet to be implemented fully, kaya nga pipilitin nating kumpletong maipatupad ang batas para ma-enjoy ng ating mga atleta coach at trainer at bago mahuli ang lahat," he narrated.

"The law is actually what our athletes needed for so long and thanks to my Kumpareng Jawo, himself a former athlete, for charting this," he said. "It needs to be implemented fully para talagang madama ng mga benefiary ang benepisyong dapat nilang matanggap.

"Na-aprubahan na rin ang Implementing Rules and Regulations ng batas kaya ang kailangan na lang ay maglaan ng budget para dito," Pacquiao quipped. "And, maybe, we can also increase its cash provisions. Let's see about that."

Among the otther features of RA 9064 Pacquiao was referring to are: affordable "pabahay" loans and other housing opportunities, scholarships that will include the athletes' qualified members of his/her families, retirement benefits, death benefits, social security benefits among others.
