MAIN EVENT FEATURES ?CANELO? ALVAREZ-AMIR KHAN SPECIAL ON SATURDAY OVER PBO-SKY CABLE AT 8:30 P.M. By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 06 May 2016 When Britain?s Amir Khan enters the ring at the classy T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas against popular Mexican Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez in what WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman believes will be a great fight between two sensational fighters, promising that the winner will get the recognition as one of the best in the world. Sulaiman described Khan as a very talented, hungry and fit fighter who deserves the respect from the boxing world. The WBC president described Khan as a hard-working, exemplary fighter who represents the best of boxing inside and outside the ring. Khan has trained harder than ever for the Canelo showdown as we will see in a video courtesy of Fight Hype in Viva Sports TV Special of the 155 pound catch-weight title fight to be telecast on a delayed basis by the Rio Olympic Games channel, TV 5 at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Fight fans who subscribe to Sky Sports of the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN can book a ?live? pay per view feed for only P199. The Viva Sports TV Special will be telecast over Pinoy Box Office (PBO) on Sky Cable at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday with a replay at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Down and almost out after being a victim to the left hook of Breidis Prescott, Khan who trained at Freddie Roach?s Wild Card Gym and benefited from working with strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza and got some insights into how to fight Barrera from eight division world champion and training partner Manny Pacquiao who himself stunned the boxing community with a spectacular beating of Barrera in November 2003, with Khan recovering nicely to score a stoppage after five rounds in front of a roaring hometown crowd. For Khan who landed several multiple combinations it was a mature performance which he said was a make or break fight for him while promoter Frank Warren said Khan boxed brilliantly. In a fight that wasn?t pretty but effective, Filipino boxing fans will see Amir Khan drop Luis Collazo three times in a roughhouse fight in Las Vegas to win by lopsided scores of 119-104 on the scorecards of judges Adalaide Byrd and Cathy Leonard and 117-106 on the scorecard of Jerry Roth on May 3, 2014 to win the vacant WBC welterweight Silver title and the WBA International welterweight belt. In a battle for his WBA light welterweight title at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on December 11, 2010, Khan faced Interim champion Marcos Maidana. Khan successfully defended his title for the third time as he dominated the bout early on and dropped Maidana in the very first round with a series of body shots but Maidana recovered and battered Khan with a furious barrage in the 10th round sending Khan wobbling across the ring towards the ropes. Khan withstood the assault and won a twelve round unanimous decision based on his performance in the early rounds and including the first round knockdown and a point deduction slapped on Maidana for throwing an elbow in round five. Golden Boy Promotions Oscar de la Hoya said it was one of the fights of the decade while the Boxing Writers Association of America named it ?The Fight of the Year.? Amir Khan has always been suspected of having a fragile chin and this was proven when he faced WBC champion Danny Garcia in a title unification bout on July 14, 2012 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Early in the fight Khan appeared to have the faster hands but Garcia soon found a way to catch Khan?s punches and found the range with his own. Khan won the first two rounds and seemed on the way to winning the third but with 29 seconds left in the round Garcia countered a Khan combination with a left hook that caught Khan on the neck and dropped him. While Khan quickly rose to his feet but it was clear he had been hurt and referee Kenny Bayless took an extra few seconds after administering the standing eight count to make sure Khan could continue. Garcia resumes his attack and nearly finished off Khan who was saved by the bell. Eight seconds into the 4th round Khan who was on unsteady legs could not withstand a barrage of punches from Garcia who had taken control of the fight, throwing punches from all angles. With 48 seconds left in the round Khan who was trying desperately to rally was smacked senseless for the thirf time. Even though he told referee Bayless he was okay to continue the veteran referee stopped the bout awarding Garcia 4th round TKO. If the Garcia fight was an example of the vulnerability of Khan then as Hall of Famer Freddie Roach who trained Khan before alongside his prized possession ? the now retired Manny Pacquiao ? believes that for him to have a chance of beating Canelo, Khan will have to fight a perfect fight for twelve rounds. At the time he trained under Roach, Amir Khan worked with strength and conditioning guru Alex Ariza who later on moved over to the camp of Floyd Mayweather Jr after Roach and Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz claimed he was causing dissension in the training c amp and convinced Pacquiao to get rid of Ariza. While in his last fight on November 11, 2015 Alvarez defeated Miguel Cotto to win the WBC middleweight title by wide margins using his power and his size while demonstrating considerable improvement and turned the tide in the middle rounds against Cotto who was trained by Freddie Roach, Canelo?s performance was nowhere near that of Manny Pacquiao who ripped Cotto apart to score a 12th round TKO in November 2009. Canelo also faltered against Floyd Mayweather Jr who won a majority decision with judge CJ Ross in a travesty, scoring the fight a draw and in the midsts of bitter criticism she resigned as a judge. One week after the disappointing Mayweather-Pacquiao ?Fight of the Century? boxing fans got what they missed ? an all-out brawl as Canelo savagely knocked out veteran James Kirkland in the 3rd round of what was described as a Texas back-alley brawl. Before a raucous crowd at the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas, the Canelo Alvarez-Austin Trout bout enabled Canelo to unify the WBC and WBA titles in a bout where both men fought well with Canelo doing more damage including putting Trout on the canvas in the 7th round with a beautiful right hand. As well known boxing writer Gareth Davies of the Daily Telegraph reported Matthew Hatton may not have the skills and speed his younger brother Ricky Hatton displayed in the ring as a double world champion but he possessed no less a fighting spirit as evidenced in the battering he survived in March 2011 in a clash for the vacant WBC light middleweight crown. The 29 year old Hatton fighting above the weight division he campaigned in for 10 years was bullied and battered by a younger, faster, heavier and more skilled Canelo Alvarez with the European welterweight champion losing every round although Canelo failed to make the weight and was fined heavily. Some fight fans and even media have claimed the Amir Khan ? Saul Canelo Alvarez showdown is a mismatch but it?s not. Amir Khan is a world class fighter who doesn?t get the respect he deserves having called out both Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao but never getting a chance to tangle with them. Khan actually shocked the establishment by going out and agreeing to fight middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez which has drawn the respect of Andre Ward, the reigning WBA super middleweight champion. Filipino fight fans will have a chance to see just how Amir Khan stands up against Canelo Alvarez when TV 5 telecasts the much-awaited title fight on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. while Sky Cable pay for view will telecast the fights including the undercard beginning at 9 :00 a.m. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
