MEPRANUM IN TITLE FIGHT AGAINST UNBEATEN SUPER FLYWEIGHT CHAMPION CARLOS CUADRAS IN MEXICO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 23 Apr 2016 Filipino Richie Mepranum got a break when the mandatory challenger to WBC super flyweight champion Carlos Cuadras, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, when taks for the mandatory didn't work out in time, allowing Cuadras to face Mepranum in a voluntary defense at the Centro de Usos M?ltiples in Los Mochis, Mexico, on Sunday, Manila Time. It will be the prohibitive favorite Cuadras' sixth title defense of the crown he won n May 2014 with a technical decision victory over Srsaket who re-emerged as the mandatory challenger following a 4th round knockout of Jose Salgado. Cuadras who is unbeaten with a record of 34-0-1 with 26 knockouts had previously fought Salgado to a technical draw in his first title defense. The Word Boxing Council reported that "In a lively crowded Main Plaza of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, the Official weigh for the WBC super flyweight Championship at the Multiple Uses Center, was celebrated with pomp, circumstance and fanfare. The undefeated World Boxing Council super flyweight world champion, Carlos ?Pr?ncipe? Cuadras, and title contender, Richie ?Magnum? Mepranum, passed the official ceremony without the merest hint of a problem. Both fighters made the weight handily. Cuadras came in at 113.3 pounds while Mepranum tipped the scales at 112.8 pounds in what the WBC suggested would be a war. However, the records of both fighters show that Mepranum is a boxer and a stylist and not a heavy puncher unlike Cuadras who is favored to retain his title. The WBC described the preparation of Cuadras as "meticulous for his title defense against dangerous Filipino southpaw Richie "Magnum" Mepranum. The 27 year old Cuadras who is unbeaten with a record of 34-0-1 with 26 knockouts is coming off a twelve round unanimous decision over Japan?s Koki Eto last November 28. Mepranum who is 28 has a record of 31-4-1 with 8 knockouts and isn?t a big puncher but a talented boxer. One of his big wins was in a ten round bout against flyweight champion Hernan Marquez on March 12, 2010 in Texas on the eve of eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao?s victory over Joshua Clottey at the Dallas Cowboy?s Stadium. Mepranum won the vacant World Boxing Union (German version) super flyweight title with a 6th round TKO of Marjun Tabanco on November 14 last year. The WBC website reported that Cuadras has a ?day shift nine to five...and then some and has been among the jagged mountain peaks of Temoaya, State of Mexico. Cuadras said "We had the fortune to train for the first time in the new Gym Jose Sulaiman, here in Otomi. First class facilities from which we've drawn a lot of power due to the help of my coaches Miguel Mendoza and "Tyson" Martinez.? He said "My intention is to make a few more defenses this year and then raid and invade the bantamweight division led by Yamanaka, who's also undefeated."
