ERROL SPENCE JR SCORES DEVASTATING 5TH ROUND STOPPAGE OF CHRIS ALGIERI By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 17 Apr 2016 Errol Spence Jr. scored a devastating 5th round stoppage of over-hyped Chris Algieri in a welterweight bout at Barclays Center in New York, Sunday morning Manila Time, in the main event of the Premier Boxing Championship card. While Spence Jr did what eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao and WBC Silver champion Amir Khan failed to do, it must be noted that Pacquiao thrashed Algieri in a one-sided fight where he scored six knockdowns and dominated every minute of the twelve round welterweight title bout at the Cotai Arena in Macau before some 13,000 plus fans on November 23, 2013 while Khan also scored a comfortable unanimous twelve round decision at the Barclays Center on May 29 last year. The unbeaten Spence who improved to 20-0 with 17 knockouts had his seventh straight knockout against Algieri and a quick ending appeared imminent once Spence began to use his quickness. In a post fight interview Spence said ?It meant a lot to get the stoppage," pointing out "I did something Manny Pacquiao couldn't do, nor Amir Khan. That shows where I'm at in the welterweight division. Everyone wanted to see what I could do against a proven fighter and I blew him out of the water." Algieri for his part said "He brought some good stuff tonight. He stayed composed and that was a big part of it" but after Spence dropped him in the 4th with a solid overhand right and dropped Algieri again early in round five and ended the contest with a left hook that sent Algieri spiraling to the canvas forcing referee Benjy ESteves to c all a halt to the bout. Algieri said he failed to ?stick with each game plan. There were a couple of different game plans, a couple of routes I could have gone. I was switching between two different game plans. If you do anything halfway it works none of the way." Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
