YAMANAKA SURVIVES TWO KNOCKDOWNS, DROPS CHALLENGER SOLIS TWICE TO RETAIN WBC BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 05 Mar 2016 Unbeaten World Boxing Council bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka of Japan overcame two knockdowns to drop challenger Liboro Solis twice to retain his title via a unanimous twelve round decision at the Konan, Shiga Prefecture in Kyoto on Friday night. The Japan Times reported the 33 year old southpaw ?escaped a wild title fight, extending his unbeaten streak to 27 fights with a twelve round unanimous decision.? The hard-hitting southpaw engaged Solis in a fast-paced bout with both fighters on the attack from the opening bell with Venezuela?s Solis getting the better of the Japanese champion in the early rounds. Solis often lunged forward and regularly caught Yamanaka before early in round three the Japan Times said Yamanaka was ?caught by a thunderbolt of a straight right saw Yamanaka on his back.? Solis immediately sought to capitalize on the knockdown chasing the champion wildly in the last two minutes of the round And with some 20 second left in the round Solis connected with a right counter-punch to drop Yamanaka for a second time in the round. Yamanaka changed his tactics and began to out-box Solis while avoiding his monstrous right hand and catching him with as he charged forward. By round six Yamanaka had turned the fight around and was clearly on top but still had to overcome the two early knockdowns and opened up a deep cut on the bridge of Solis? nose which bled heavily. Yamanaka who had dropped Solis in round 2, nailed him with an overhand left in round 9 to and took the championship rounds handily to win on the scorecards of all three judges, Gary Ritter and Cathy Leonard of the USA and Mexico?s Carlos Pelayo who turned in identical 117-107 tallies.
