By Eddie Alinea PhilBoxing.com Sat, 26 Dec 2015
Tournment surprised package, Woman Fide Master Shania Mendoza, celebrated Christmas one day ahead Thursday with a 65-move French Defense triumph then drew her next assignment two days later to continue sharing the leadership after five rounds of the disstaff side of the Third Asean Chess Championships in Jakarta in Indonesia.
Not to be outdone, International Master Emmanuel Garcia, only had to halve points with his Round 4 and Round 5 rivals to likewise, forge a tie for the top spot in the men's division play going into the next round.
The 17-year-old Mendoza overpowered her Indonesian WFM counterpart Dita Karenza in Round 4 on Christmas eve en route to an immaculate 4.0 norm, one point shy of a possible perfect 5 brought about when she and Malaysian WCM Nur Nabila Hisham Azman decided to a truce in their Round 5 encounter Saturday.
The 20-yearr-old Garcia, meanwhile, contented himself in peacefully settling things up with fellow IM Zaw Htun Wynn of Myanmar in 49 moves of an English Opening symmetrical variation on Thursday before achieving the same result against top-seeded Gradmaster Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia for 3.5 points in a tie for first with Malaysian FM Yeo Li Tian.
Friday, Christmas day, was a rest day.
WIM Janelle Mae Frayna also drew her round 4 and round 5 assignments as she dropped to third place in the women's standing. WIM Bernadette Galas was in a logjam from the 5th to 7th places.
GM Darwin Laylo fell to 18-year-old Indonesian IM Winshand Cuhendi Sean in a monumental upset of a Caro Kann Defense.
