The 17-year-old Mendoza overpowered her Indonesian WFM counterpart Dita Karenza in Round 4 on Christmas eve en route to an immaculate 4.0 norm, one point shy of a possible perfect 5 brought about when she and Malaysian WCM Nur Nabila Hisham Azman decided to a truce in their Round 5 encounter Saturday.
The 20-yearr-old Garcia, meanwhile, contented himself in peacefully settling things up with fellow IM Zaw Htun Wynn of Myanmar in 49 moves of an English Opening symmetrical variation on Thursday before achieving the same result against top-seeded Gradmaster Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia for 3.5 points in a tie for first with Malaysian FM Yeo Li Tian.
Friday, Christmas day, was a rest day.
