NBA -- Whiteside stars in Heat's triumph over Blazers By Roman David Garay PhilBoxing.com Mon, 21 Dec 2015 MIAMI- Hassan Whiteside usually finds himself in the bench in late fourth quarter situations. The hymn had a different tune Sunday afternoon at American Airlines Arena. Whiteside played all but 29 seconds in the second half and delivered key baskets in Miami Heat's 116-109 victory over the Portland Trailblazers. "It was a great feeling." Whiteside said. "Just being able to contribute in the fourth quarter and getting to finish the game with my teammates." He added. " I didn't realize how long I played until I looked at the monitor." Whiteside finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks. Chris Bosh scored 29 points for the Heat while Gerald Green and Loul Deng chipped in 17 points a piece. The Blazers were scoring at will in the first half scoring 62 points before intermission and comfortably ahead by 10 over the hosts. Damian Lillard led the Blazers with 32 points and 9 dimes and backcourt mate C.J McCollum added 20 points and 6 assists. Miami opened the ensuing half with a 12-2 run to tie the ballgame with 7:55 left in the third. Behind Lillard's 12 points, the Blazers staved off the initial Heat rally in the third and kept them at bay as Portland held on a 4-point advantage going into the fourth quarter. Then Bosh and Whiteside happened. The Heat big men combined for 19 of Miami's 34 points in the fourth quarter. Bosh scored the first 11 points for Miami and Whiteside delivered 8 crucial points towards the end including two alley-oops from Dwyane Wade which eventually delivered the final nail in the coffin. "It was harrowing in the second half,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra shared after the game. ''But I liked us showing some mental stability and competitive toughness while things weren't necessarily going our way.'' Miami (16-10) will host Detroit on Tuesday while the Blazers (11-18) will travel to Atlanta Monday. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Roman David Garay. |
