REX TSO TRAINING IN CEBU By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Sat, 31 Oct 2015 CEBU CITY ? Hong Kong boxing star Rex Tso is in the boxing capital of the Philippines and benefiting from his intense sparring sessions at the Rex ?Wakee? Salud gym. The 28 year old southpaw known as the ?Wonder Kid? is in the midst of a six week training regimen under the guidance of Filipino trainer Jake Verano. The weather has not been kind to him though, ?It?s hot.? Tso told this writer Friday afternoon before he started warming up. It is not just visitors like Tso, but also the locals, who have felt the effects of the more than 30 degree centigrade heat and overhead smaze (combination of smoke and haze). But this did not stop him from engaging in another torrid afternoon schedule with the fighters from the Flores boxing gym of Cebu. He first sparred with the bigger featherweight Neil John Tabanao for four rounds. Tso then shifted to Renoel Pael, a former ?Buhay Boksingero? champion. Pael will be gunning for the OPBF flyweight title this December 2 against Ardin Diale in Manila. Tso capped his sparring session against the speedy miniflyweight southpaw Joey Canoy. The mix of size, power and speed gave Tso a great workout. He then proceeded to hit the punch mitts with trainer Jake Verano. Tso (18-0,11KO?s) stopped Brad Hore of Australia in seven rounds last August in his native Hong Kong for the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council superflyweight title. Last March in Macau, Tso figured in a memorable ring war with Filipino Michael Enriquez. The fight for the WBA International belt lasted the full ten rounds with both sides pushed to their physical limits in a give and take battle that had the crowd roaring inside the Cotai Arena. Tso scoring a knockdown in the third proved to be the decider as two judges had him ahead by a point 95-94, with a third judge also scoring it for him at 96-93. Tso actually fought in the Philippines twice in 2012, winning against Mabert Paulino and Aldrin Janer. Tso?s team is eyeing a showdown against Luis ?El Nica? Concepcion (33-4, 24KO?s) of Panama, the interim WBA superflyweight titlist. The match is not yet set but Tso said he is preparing himself for whoever will come his way.
