UC WEBMASTERS PULLS OFF STUNNING UPSET OVER DEFENDING CESAFI BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS SWU COBRAS By Michael Kenji Izumi PhilBoxing.com Sun, 20 Sep 2015 TEAM STANDINGS: USC - 9-1 UV - 8-2 SWU - 7-4 UC - 4-6 USJ-R - 4-6 CIT-U - 5-7 USPF - 0-11 CEBU CITY ? The University of Cebu Webmaters pulled off a stunning upset over defending champions Southwestern University Cobras 82-75 to ensure that the final four chase continues in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) even as the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats stayed alive with a win over the hapless University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers, 86-80. During the Juniors division semifinals, the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers eliminated the University of San Carlos Baby Warriors, 70-66; while the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles advanced into the juniors division finals as they cruised to a 79-47 obliteration of the UC Junior Webmasters. The Webmasters started the game on a mission as they raced ahead to a 46-35 first half lead as trio of guards Earl Montilla, Clint Suelto and Justine Dacalos fired at will against the Cobras' defense. The lead by UC grew to as big as 20 points with 5 minutes remaining in the 3rd before the Cobras staged a big rally headed by the duo of CESAFI's reigning MVP Mark Jayven Tallo and former UC Webmaster Jan Michael Auditor behind a 14-0 run which cut the Webmasters lead to 64-60 at the end of the quarter. But the Webmasters countered with Garciano Puerto and rookie Joseph Daniel Mayol scoring timely baskets down the stretch as they kept the Cobras at bay until the final buzzer. Suelto was named the ?Best Player of the Game? by the Viva Sports TV panelists Rico Navarro and Sandi Grumo following his career-high 17 points along with his 3 rebounds and a steal, while Montilla and Dacalos combined for 22 points. Two-time MVP Tallo had a superb game with 30 points, 18 rebounds and 3 assists for the Cobras, while Auditor scored 16 points. In the 2nd Game, the Wildcats held their own against the Panthers, who kept the game close in the first half, when CIT-U posted a 44-35 halftime lead. During the 2nd half, the Panthers kept the game close by chopping the lead to just six points at the end of the 3rd, 61-55 and tied it by virtue of two triples by John Allain Alocillo and Jawein Ceniza at the start of the 4th quarter. But the Wildcats doused the rally behind Joeferio Kristoffer Mumar's five triples that gave them the lead which they held on to until l the final buzzer. Prolific scorer Joshua Dela Cerna was named the ?Best Player of the Game? with his 30-point, 10-rebound output, while Mumar scored 17 points with 5 of 6 from 3-point land. Alocillo led the Panthers with 14 points, while Ceniza, Lyndon Colina and Clyde Avance?a combined for 33 points in a losing effort. The Wildcats finished the elimination round with a 5-7 win-loss record and they have to play a waiting game as the Jaguars and the Webmasters will continue to fight for the last final four spot.
