NIETES TO DEFEND HIS WBO TITLE AGAINST MEXICAN CHAMPION JUAN ALEJO IN U.S. DEBUT

PhilBoxing.com

The longest reigning Filipino world champion, WBO light flyweight king Donnie "Ahas" Nietes, will defend his title against Mexican champion Juan "Pinky" Alejo at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on October 17 in a blockbuster card that will mark ALA Promotions breakthrough into the American boxing scene.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer confirmed in a conversation with the New Standard/PhilBoxing.com that Nietes who has a record of 36-1-4 with 21 knockouts, will make his eighth title defense against the tough Mexican champion who has a record of 21-3 with 13 knockouts and is ranked No. 7. He said they are only waiting for Alejo's US visa.

Alejo won the Mexican light flyweight title with an 11th round TKO of Jose Guadalupe Martinez on August 20, 2014 and is coming off a a ten round split decision victory over Jose Rivas last May 27.

Alejo twice beat Erik Ramirez by a 2nd round TKO in scheduled ten round bouts in September and October 2013. Ramirez was the Mexican who challenged Nietes for his title and lost by a twelve round unanimous decision in his hometown of Oaxaca, Mexico on February 28, 2009.

Aldeguer said Nietes will leave for Los Angeles to continue his training in the second week of September and is expected to work with strength and conditioning coach Nick Curson.

Aldeguer also welcomed the chance for Nietes to spar with former two division champion Brian Viloria who face a massive test against undefeated pound for pound No. 2 WBC flyweight champion Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez of Nicaragua also on October 17 but at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Aldeguer informed us that Viloria's longtime trainer and friend Ruben Gomez can contact ALA head trainer Edito "Ala" Villamor to arrange their sparring schedule at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach who is training Viloria together with his Filipino assistant Marvin Somodio.

The Pagara brothers, IBF super bantamweight Intercontinental champion Prince Albert Pagara and light welterweight and elder brother Jason Pagara as well as undefeated Mark "Magnifico" Magsayo will leave on September 6.
