Undercard results for Cotto-Geale in New York By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 07 Jun 2015 Brooklyn, New York - The Barclays Center in Brooklyn opened their doors at 6 pm for fight fans who are eager for a night of knockouts in Saturday's big boxing event at the venue that features New York favorite, Miguel Cotto and Australian challenger Daniel Geale. Simpson TKOs Simon Debuting Super Bantamweight Shawn Simpson of Chicago dictated the tempo in the first three rounds of his first professional fight then scored a killer left hook that sent Damon Simon of Beaumont, Texas down with more than a minute left in the final round. Simon answered the count but was visibly dazed after the knockdown. Referee Tony Chiarantano took a good look at the Texan and halted the fight at the 2:05 mark in favor of Simpson. Luna decisions Lopez Angel Luna of the Dominican Republic registered a knockdown-laden Unanimous Decision win against previously unbeaten Jose Lopez of Carolina, Puerto Rico. Luna sent Lopez to the canvas in Rounds 2 and 5 of a scheduled 6 round featherweight match with a strong overhand right in both rounds to score a minor upset against the unbeaten Lopez. Judges favored Luna with scores of 58 - 53, 58 - 53 and 57 - 54. He was deducted a point in Round 3 after he struck his foe behind the head. Luna improves to 11 wins (6 KOs) against a single defeat and a draw while Lopez disappointed the predominantly Puerto Rican fans in the venue with the loss which was his first in 17 bouts (15-1-1 , 11 KOs). Fleischer TKO's Millner in 1 New Jersey's Dustin Fleischer scored the quickest stoppage of the night with a 1st round TKO of debuting Karim Miller of Eden, North Carolina. The now 2-0 welterweight from Monmouth Beach unloaded early bombs against the bewildered Miller who was unable to answer Fleischer's assaults. This forced Referee Earl Brown to halt the fight at the 1:06 mark for Fleischer. Younan stops Sawyer Brooklyn's own Junior Younan delighted the home crowd with a 2nd round TKO of Orlando, Florida's Mike Sawyer. Younan dropped Sawyer in the opener of a 6 round Super Middleweight bout with a hard left hook then finished the job with another wicked knockdown in the succeeding round against his ill-fated opponent. Officials at ringside stopped the fight with 31 seconds left (2:29) in the round for Younan who climbed to 7-0 and 6 KOs while Sawyer was demoted to 6-4 ( 4 KOs). Zhilel manhandles Thomas Chinese heavyweight Zhang Zhilel won by a dominant Unanimous Decision against American Glen Thomas in a 4 round beat down. The bigger and taller Zhilel who hailed from Henan, China dropped Thomas of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania three times, once each in Rounds 1, 3 and 4 en route to a shutout scores of 40 - 33 across the board. Zhilel remained undefeated at 4-0 (2 KOs) with the win while Thomas is now 1-4. Vargas upsets Vazquez Jr. In a Mexico versus Puerto Rico war at the Barclays, Fernando Vargas of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico scored an upset of former super bantam champ, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. of Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Vargas' aggression in the second half of their 8 round featherweight contest served him well as he outpointed Vazquez with scores of 78 - 74, 77 - 75 and 79 - 73 in the three judges at ringside. Vazquez Jr. dropped the 2nd loss of his last three fights in the last 11 months and dimmed his chances for another title run. Vargas improves to 29-9-3 (20 KOs ) with a win over a former world champion while Vazquez Jr. slips to 24 - 5 - 1 (19 KOs) with the defeat.
