CHICAGO -- Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler combined for 48 points to lead the Chicago Bulls over the Milwaukee Bucks, 103-91, Saturday night at the United Center.
Chicago?s All-Star Duo were simply too much to handle for Milwaukee as Jimmy Butler had playoffs career high with 25 points while Derrick Rose pitched in 23 points and 7 assists in his first postseason game since tearing his ACL in the 2012 playoffs.
Pau Gasol struggled offensively, but made up for it by grabbing 13 boards. Aaron Brooks hit three 3?s to lead Chicago?s bench with 13 points.
Rose, a Chicago native, looked very comfortable against a young Milwaukee team. Chants of MVP roared and echoed throughout the United Center each time 6-foot-3 point guard went to the free throw stripe.
Although both teams finished the regular season ranking in the top 10 in defense, Chicago demonstrated that it takes more than just defense to win in the postseason. The Bulls outrebounded Milwaukee 52-41, nailed 12 threes compared to Milwaukee's 4, and despite committing 19 turnovers, held the Bucks to 39% from the field.
?We lost. We can't make the same mistakes as we did tonight. We have to make adjustments.? said Bucks guard O.J. Mayo, who had one field goal on seven attempts.
Kris Middleton led Milwaukee with 18 points but Giannis Antetokounmpo, one of Milwaukee?s top offensive options, was held to 12 points, missing 9 of 13 field goals. Ersan Ilyasova missed 4 of his 5 from beyond the arc, but still managed to contribute 15 points and 3 assists.
The Bucks also scored 25 points off of Chicago?s 19 turnovers. Milwaukee got within 3 early in the second half but Chicago quickly responded by going on a 15-7 run and they never looked back.
When asked if the Bulls were being careless with the ball, Chicago?s head coach Tom Thibodeau responded:
?I think it was a byproduct of being too unselfish. But I?d rather have that problem and correct that, than have people not pass the ball to each other. But we have to be disciplined. We have to utilize technique and challenge shots properly.?
Chicago has now won 8 straight at home. Game 2 is on Monday at the United Center.
