2015 NBA All-Star Game - Westbrook "Rains" as MVP as West beats East By Adeline Deladisma PhilBoxing.com Mon, 16 Feb 2015 NEW YORK -- On a blustery, bone-chilling evening in the epicenter of the basketball universe, the West defeated the East 163-158 in the 64th edition of the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday night at the Madison Square Garden. The game began with an historic tip-off between brothers Marc and Pau Gasol, the first time brothers have started in an All-Star Game. Big brother Pau won the tip, and Lebron James drew first blood with two definitive dunks. James, the leading vote-getter in the East, was on a tear and seemed to be after MVP honors. That distinction went to Russell Westbrook. The Oklahoma City Thunder guard led all scorers with 41 off the bench, just one point shy of Wilt Chamberlain's record of 42 points set in 1962 and one above Michael Jordan's 40 in 1988. When asked about the significance of the achievement, Westbrook said, "It's definitely an honor to be grouped with those two guys, especially in the All-Star Game." He was 16 of 28 from the field and had 3 steals. The contest looked to be a potential blow out in the first half when the West led by as many as 20 early in the second quarter. The East would bounce back and were only down by one at the half, 83-82. James led the East with 30 points and 7 assists. The West's Chris Paul notched the only double-double with 12 points and 15 assists. The showmanship and pageantry of the host city was on display all evening with exciting performances scattered through the entire game. The national anthem was performed by Grammy Award Queen Latifa and the halftime show by recording artist Ariana Grande. Broadway came to the Garden during the time outs, which featured show casts performing snippets from their most well-known numbers from Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, and Chicago. There were celebrity sightings, including musicians, actors, and sports figures. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was also in attendance, as was the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin E. Dempsey, who is the highest ranking officer in the armed forces. The lights shone brightly on the basketball court in New York City this past weekend. The All-Star break continues until Thursday as teams in earnest begin their final push to the playoffs.
