NBA -- Bulls wallop Spurs, 104-81 By. Adeline Deladisma By Adeline Deladisma PhilBoxing.com Sat, 24 Jan 2015 CHICAGO -- On the heels of a fiery post-game criticism from the usually quiet Derrick Rose, the Chicago Bulls put forth an admirable performance against the defending NBA champs and defeated the San Antonio Spurs, 104-81, on Thursday night at the United Center. After Monday's loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Rose voiced irritation at what he felt was a lack of effort from his team. After six losses in eight games, in the days to follow, the media painted a picture of team disarray and a midseason identity crisis. The two teams entered the contest with the exact same record, 27-16, at the midpoint of the season. While the Bulls have been sliding, the Spurs got 2014 Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard back from a hand injury that kept him out of 15 games this season and had won their last four games. The Spurs jumped to a quick lead scoring the first five points of the game and led 21-20 at the end of the first quarter. Their lead would not last much longer as the Bulls went on a 9-2 run to open the second quarter and took the lead at the half. The Bulls outscored the Spurs 31-20 in the third quarter and blew open the game, leading by as many as 25. It was a balanced effort from the home team, with six players scoring in double figures. They were led by Rose, who finished with 22 points and 6 assists. Pau Gasol, who was named an East All Star starter just prior to the game, notched a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Leonard led the Spurs with 16 points, followed by Patty Mills with 12. San Antonio shot only 37 percent from the field and were out rebounded by Chicago 46-39, leading head coach Gregg Popovich to this assessment: "We played embarrassing basketball. I want my money back." And Rose's assessment? "We came out and really competed." All to the delight of the sold out crowd at the United Center. Both teams return to action on Friday. The Bulls travel to Dallas to face the Mavericks and the Spurs will host the Los Angeles Lakers at home.
