NBA -- Grizzlies fend off pesky Lakers, 99-93

LOS ANGELES -- The struggling Los Angeles Lakers, currently in last place in the Western Conference, gave the top-ranked Memphis Grizzlies all they can handle Wednesday night at the Staples Center.
But despite the gallant effort, the Lakers fell short as the bruising Grizzlies escaped with a 99-93 victory to stay in first place in the West and share the overall league standings lead with the Toronto Raptors of the Eastern Conference, who also log a 13-2 record.
Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 19 points, 11 rebound and three blocks. Point guard Mike Conley also had 19 with seven assists while Zach Randolph added 16 and nine boards. Courtney Lee contributed 10 for Memphis, which dominated the paint with 46 points.
"That's all we want to do, is to come out focused for the first couple of months of the season, set a good standard for ourselves and have to just hold ourselves accountable and try to get better," Conley told reporters after sending the Lakers to their seventh loss in nine games.
Kobe Bryant made only five of 22 field goals but still led the Lakers with 22. Los Angeles, which fell to 3-12, got 14 points and five assists from Jeremy Lin while Nick Young pitched in 13. Ronnie Price and Jordan Hill each had 11.
After seizing the opening half, 51-46, the Lakers turned cold and were pummeled in the third quarter, 34-23, allowing the Grizzlies to take a six-point lead that they nursed until the final horn.
Home court has not been kind to the Lakers this season as they fell to 1-7 at the Staples Center. In this latest debacle they made only 33 of 81 shots, a poor 40.7 percent.
