CHRIS ARREOLA AND MANNY QUEZADA HEADLINE ESPN2'S "FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS"

By Jonathan Davis

Never has any Mexican Heavyweight since Manuel Ramos in the 1970s, come close to being heralded as a serious contender for the World Heavyweight crown.

This August 13, 2010, in the Goosen-Tutor Promotions, at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, two Americans, of Mexican descent, both coming from unexpected defeats, meet in a crossroads battle, to vie for the vacant WBC Fecombox Heavyweight Crown. For the winner, he may carry on that torch that the late Manuel Ramos started, and hopefully become the first ever Mexican to win a World Heavyweight Title.

Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola, earned the respect as a strong heavyweight prospect after impressively rattling off 27 straight wins with 24KOs to get his first shot at Vitali Klitschko's WBC Heavyweight Title in September 2009. However, not only did he fail in the attempt, his weaknesses got exposed too - that he was a plodding fighter who lacked the footwork and handspeed, and relied mainly on throwing bombs in a close quarter combat. The champion from Ukraine never obliged him though. Vitali Klitscho, using his considerable edge in height, weight, reach, and speed, kept a safe distance from Arreola all throughout the fight, while hitting him with jarring jobs and combinations in a totally dominating performance that forced Arreola's handlers to stop the fight after the 10th round.

Bouncing back with a 4th round TKO of tough Brian Minto three months later, he was to face Cruiserweight king, Tomasz Adamek of Poland, for the IBF International and WBO North American Boxing Organization Heavyweight Titles, as a final tune-up before taking another crack at the Linear Heavyweight Crown. But again, his title quest was derailed when Tomasz Adamek, squeaked out a majority decision victory despite being outweighed by 33 lbs. Adamek's speed and punch rate proved to be the levelling factor in the upset win.

On the other hand, Manny "El Toro" Quezada, 29-5, 18KOs,has been a darling of the Mexican crowd, when he steadily built his status as a strong Heavyweight contender, picking career defining wins around California. But, last April 8,2010, in what was supposed to be an easy 5th defense of his WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) Heavyweight Crown, and a prop up fight, prelude to a possible World Heavyweight Championship challenge, journeyman Jason Gavern handed Quezada a heartbreaking split decision loss.

Now both Chicano fighters will square off with so much at stake, that losing is no longer an option. Who shall the fans embrace as the next Mexican crusader for the Heavyweight crown, and who shall be left in the wayside to perish in oblivion, shall be settled come August 13th. And, with their similar brawling style and "take no prisoner" attitude inside the ring, expect this as a certified barnburner.
