Mayol back in the gym, but can he get a title shot? PhilBoxing.com Tue, 05 Jul 2011  Former WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol responded to this writer?s e-mail query yesterday regarding his intention to fight WBA flyweight champion Hernan 'Tyson' Marquez of Mexico, which was posted in an article written by Dennis Guillermo of the Examiner. "Ganahan ko ako sunod ma kuntra anang Hernan Marquez kay ako man ta na fight nya duol naman kaayo ko nila gipahibaw mao wala ko ni sugot.Karon na human na iyang fight ganahan ko ako mo kuntra ana niya, pero wala pako kahibaw kay busy man gud ang MP promotion. Mao training lang sa ko ug hinay hinay." Mayol?s reply in Cebuano was that he was offered to fight the Mexican champion but he turned it down because he lacked time to prepare for the title fight.Mayol in his last sentence was referring to Manny Pacquiao's MP Promotions, who is responsible for securing fights for him. We can only hope they can schedule meaningful fights for the former Mandaue City native. Marquez on the other hand made a successful first title defense at the expense of Edrin Dapudong last weekend. Mayol is now based in Los Angeles. He outpointed Javier Gallo in the undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley in Las Vegas last May 8. Mayol is back in the gym and hopes to make one more run at a world title. The 29 year old Mayol has more than paid his dues as a fighter. A few years ago, Mayol had the unenviable experience of training on a near-empty stomach. But Mayol soldiered on despite the lack of support. This kind of struggle escapes the minds of critics who amuse themselves by labelling a losing Filipino boxer a ?bum?. He had two frustrating WBO title bouts against Ivan Calderon before his brief reign as WBC champion. It was, unfortunately for him, hounded by controversy. The window of opportunity may be slowly closing for Mayol. Speed is very important in the lower weight classes and it is the first to go after years of wear and tear. It is not exactly an emergency but it certainly isn?t a case for ?hinay hinay? as far as the people negotiating for his bouts are concerned.
