"LABAN CARLO, LABAN!!!" PhilBoxing.com Mon, 30 Jan 2012 Carlo Maquinto has just fought an action packed battle last Saturday night in Caloocan City, but his fight is not over yet. This time he is fighting the most important fight of his life. In fact, he is fighting for dear life in a hospital bed in Manila. Maquinto engaged fellow Filipino Mark Joseph Acosta in an action packed match in Caloocan City, Philippines as part of the city's celebration of it's 50th year founding anniversary. He fought Acosta to an eight round Majority Draw despite being dropped twice in the opening round. The determined Maquinto fought a game Costa in what is the night's most appreciated fight because of the toe to toe war between the two. That would come though with a price. Maquinto collapsed after the grueling eight round fight and was rushed to the Far Eastern Hospital where he is in very serious condition. According to a report from Philboxing's Ronnie Nathanielsz, that Maquinto is in coma in the said hospital. Doctors are unable to operate on the 21 year old boxer from the Shape Up Boxing Gym of Baguio City because he "was too weak and may not be able to survive surgery" as mentioned in the article. Report from GMA News says that the boxer suffered subdural hematoma or a collection of blood in the brain, most likely as a result of trauma to the head from the bout. This is a sad occurrence on what has been a very busy weekend of boxing in the country, with two major promotions staging boxing events last Saturday. It is our hope that Maquinto and his family will get the best medical, financial and emotional support that he and his family needs in this very difficult time. I know our dear friend Gerry Penalosa and his promotional outfit will do his best to assist them. I hope that the Games and Amusement Board and the City of Caloocan will do their share too in ensuring that Carlo receives the very best care and assistance in the most important fight of his life. I also hope that the GAB will look into this fight and see if something like this can be prevented in future bouts. Seeing a boxer suffer serious injury in the ring is one of the saddest thing that you can witness in the sport. Despite the safety precautions in place, the danger of injury, disability and death is a possibility in boxing. Prompt medical attention is needed once it happens and it looks like Maquinto was afforded that. He now need the very best treatment that he can be afforded on. And besides that, Carlo now needs our prayers and support. I asked my fellow boxing fans who are very active in boxing, that we say a prayer for Carlo as he battles for dear life. Let us take a break from the internet and various boxing forums for this purpose. Instead of reading another Mayweather - Pacquiao article which just adds to the chaos of this negotiations, let us save that time to mention Carlo in our prayers. Carlo, fight on. We are praying and rooting for you. You have been undefeated in the ring, there is no reason to lose now. You have come back from two knockdowns last Saturday, you can do the same thing again.
