Kudos to the WBO

Last Saturday?s boxing event can be likened to a United Nations Convention. Inside the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City, I could see at least seven (7) countries represented therein, counting only the fighters and the ring officials, excluding the members of raucous crowd at the venue. USA, Thailand, Panama, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and of course, our own Pilipinas. It was the first time that I attended a boxing card here in our country with this kind of variety as far as variety of nationalities in attendance inside one roof.

Not only that, the ?Boxing at the Bay : Young Guns? sports special offered three (3) international championship belts on the line. The first was the Pan Pacific Lightweight Championship of the International Boxing Federation (IBF), the second was the Oriental Superbantamweight Championship of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the third and last was the World Superflyweight Championship Eliminator of the World Boxing Association (WBA).

But without any shadow of doubt, it was the championship fight matched by the WBO that should be awarded the ?Fight of the Night?. Ni?o Magboo of Touchgloves Boxing Gym (11W-1L-1D, 4KOs) and Ray Las Pi?as of Mananquil Boxing Gym (9W-1L-4D, 8Kos) was an evenly matched affair. Both fighters executed with discipline their respective game plans to attain victory and claim the beautiful WBO Oriental Superbantamweight Championship belt. From start to finish, it was crystal clear that Magboo?s volume of punches was his greatest asset. This is a product of the excellent boxing program of the Touchgloves Boxing Team of Elmer Anuran, which gave Ni?o the needed stamina to throw a lot of leather on the head and body of ?Stingray?. On the part of the visiting fighter, whose fights are being arranged by well-respected international boxing manager and promoter Sammy ?Don King? Gello-ani, it was his good defense and accurate punching who made the fight very competitive from beginning to end.

The fight was both fighters? step up in weight from Bantamweight (118 lbs. maximum) to Superbantamweight (122 lbs. maximum).

It is always a permanent slogan in boxing that ?Styles make fights? and the two ring gladiators? individual styles was tailored made for each other to the delight fight fans, who were screaming in excitement most of the twelve round competition.

The first three rounds were dominated by Magboo, with Las Pi?as on the receiving end of the non-stop attack of the reigning WBO Asia Pacific Bantamweight Champion. Magboo was credited with a flash knockdown in the third canto.

In the middle rounds, Las Pi?as proved to be a ?live? opponent coming to the backyard of his adversary with an upset in mind to frustrate the majority of the spectators rooting for Magboo.

The championship rounds could go either way as they pounded each other with reckless abandon bearing in mind that a win could give the victor a world championship opportunity from WBO.

According to Gello-ani, he told his fighter before the fight that if his hand will be raised at the end of the fight, he will be included in a huge fight card that will be promoted by the well-liked Cebu-based boxing fixture. Elmer Anuran, who promoted the successful event, promised Magboo that a win in impressive fashion will surely encourage the young promoter from Agoncillo, Batangas to approach the leadership of the WBO to consider Magboo as a possible contender for the Superbantamweight Championship Belt now held by Puerto Rican Wilfredo Vasquez, Jr.

In the end, Magboo prevailed thru a well-deserved Unanimous Decision after the fight went the full route.

Leon Panoncillo, President of WBO Asia Pacific, Oriental and African Divisions, should receive a nationwide salute from the whole Filipino community for producing this match-up of two young and up-and-coming Pinoy boxers, who both deserve the rare opportunity to be noticed on the world stage.

This fight should be the direct proof that the WBO is working very hard to have their champions as the best of the best. The Puerto-Rico based boxing institution gives credit where credit is due. Its quest for excellence is second to none. No wonder, our very own national hero known as the ?PACMAN? is part of the WBO?s present pool of champions.

From us Filipinos, Kudos at Maraming Salamat WBO!
