Minus 8TH Division Title, PACQUIAO-COTTO Rematch Won?t Prove Anything New PhilBoxing.com Thu, 10 Jun 2010  With Miguel Cotto?s not so convincing victory over Yuri Foreman, talks about a Pacquiao-Cotto Rematch have been buzzing around the boxing scene. This time, Cotto?s newly acquired WBA 154 Lbs Belt will be at stake, improving the legacy of the Pacman into an eight division champ, a feat which no hall of famer has ever accomplished. This possibility will fill in the vacuum of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight should negotiations fail once and for all. If we recall, Pacquiao dominated almost all of the rounds during his first showdown with the Boricuan Bomber. Hence, there is no question that Manny is the superior fighter between the two. For sure Cotto?s trainer Emmanuel Steward will throw words like ?we have a new blue print to beat Pacquiao? or ?Miguel has learned from his mistakes?. These statements are familiar lines mentioned during the media hype of the Pacquiao-Morales 3 rubber-match. But the result: Morales got the worse beating. Reality check: new training methods, new blue prints or lessons learned cannot change a fighter overnight. Such are not sufficient to match the speed and power of Congressman Pacquiao. I?m not saying a Pac-Cotto fight won?t be exciting. These two are the fiercest warriors alive in boxing. But the fight is not the most ideal choice for our National Fist if we?re talking about cementing his legacy in boxing history. Pacquiao versus Mayweather is every boxing fan?s dream. It?s the fight the whole world cannot wait to see. But if Mayweather simply doesn?t have the balls to face the Pacman challenge, then life should go on for us boxing fans. But rather than facing the already beaten Cotto, I?d prefer to see him fight Antonio Margarito who has beaten Cotto regardless of any title belt at stake. A third match with Marquez whom he has actually beaten twice will surely be marketable but won?t add much to Pacman?s prestige except that it will shut Marquez?s mouth up for good after he sleeps on the canvass. But let?s keep our fingers crossed. Pac-Floyd negotiations are still on-going. Our dream of seeing Floyd kiss the canvass for the first time can still come true. On the lighter note, starting from this issue, I am to giving you my dear fellow boxing addicts updates on schedules of our Pinoy Boxers who will fight on the coming weekend. For this weekend, Sunday June 13 (R.P. Time) our very own Ritchie Mepranum (W22 KO5 L1 D1) will be fighting Julio Cesar Miranda (W31 KO24 L5 D1) of Mexico for the vacant WBO Flyweight World Title at Centro de Convenciones, Puebla, Puebla, Mexico.
