A DREAM COME TRUE CARD IN MANDAUE ON MARCH 18

Wed, 08 Feb 2006

ALA Boxing Club's hot prospects Z "The Dream" Gorres and Czar Amonsot have barely gotten over the celebrations over their victories last Feb. 3 (Feb. 4 in Manila) at the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas against tough Mexican opponents Jose Alfredo Tirado and Christian Favela respectively, when their next card was announced upon their arrival in Cebu yesterday.

Top Cebu boxing promoter Sammy "Don King" Gello-ani, in a press conference with the Cebu media at the Cebu Grand Convention Center immediately after their arrival from the U.S. yesterday morning, has formally announced next month's big boxing event dubbed "A Dream Come True" to be held at the Mandaue City Sports Complex on March 18, 2006.

Sammy "Don King" Gello-ani (center) was flanked by Z Gorres (left) and Czar Amonsot (right) as he announced to the Cebu media yesterday the two boxers next card next month.

The 23-year-old Gorres, who now sports a 22-1-1 record with 12 KOs, topbills the card against former Thai OPBF champion Waenpetch Chuwatana for the vacant OPBF super flyweight crown while Amonsot, 14-1-1 (10 KOs), the current WBO Asia-Pacific super featherweight champ, will most likely battle it out against a yet to be named Korean opponent in the main undercard, according to Gello-ani.

The 33-year-old Chuwatana, had captured the OPBF super flyweight title on Feb. 29, 2004 over Japanese Shin Ogata in Nagoya winning by split decision. He defended it twice by knocking out Eiji Kojima in 2 rounds at the IMP Hall in Osaka on May 2, 2004 and in a rematch with Ogata on Oct. 3, 2004 in Nagoya winning by unanimous decision.

Kojima and Ogata's compatriot however, Masayuki Arinaga, snatched the crown back for Japan when Arinaga won by split decision over Chuwatana on March 26, 2005 in Yokohama. Around this time, Z Gorres had moved as the OPBF number 1 contender and was next in line to challege Arinaga for the title. Araniga however, instead of facing Gorres, opted for a rematch with Chuwatana last Dec. 5, which he won by unanimous decision and, as he had promised before the fight, vacated the title afterwards since he was to go after the WBC super flyweight crown held by compatriot Masamori Tokuyama.

That leaves Waengpetch and Gorres to fight it out for the vacant title with the former trying to claim it for the second time and the latter trying to establish his presence as one of the elite fighters in the world's super flyweight division.

Czar Amonsot said he's ready for his next fight.

Rounding up the blockbuster card are the Philippine flyweight title bout between Rocky Fuentes and Jojo Bardon; Donnie Nietes against former WBC International miminumweight champion Armard dela Cruz; Robert Allanic against Robert Rubillar and A.J. Banal against a yet to be named Thai foe from the Chuwatana group.

More Fights in the U.S.

Meahwhile Gello-ani happily reported that Guilty Boxing president and CEO Nick Rattena was extremely pleased at the fine showing of Gorres and Amonsot. Gello=ani said Rattena had asked him to "bring in more Filipino boxers to the U.S. as they had 60 more shows calendared for this year."

Gello-ani said Rattena has already reserved him one slot for Guilty's March 24 card and he said he will most likely send one of his prized wards, the Philippine bantamweight king Michael Domingo to see action for the first time in the U.S. soil.

Gello-ani further added that the escalating Filipino-Mexican boxing rivalry has made the Filipino boxer a hot commodity in the U.S. and has allowed U.S. promoters and managers to actively scout and look for Filipino boxing talents.
