The Final Gunfight PhilBoxing.com 22 Nov 2006 Just like in the days of the Old West, two pistoleros squared off for the bragging rights in claiming the title of “fastest gun alive.” But this around, they wore guns instead of packing pistols. It was now time for the third and final showdown. It was high noon in Vegas. The aging gunslinger, El Terrible, bore the scars of battles past. He knew he was up against the best opponent he ever faced. A man who possessed the force of a typhoon from Southeast Asia. The Pacman had youth and bravado on his side. A deadly mix of power and speed. The protagonists have brought out the best from each other. They made the other one strive to be better. They both knew they had finally found the worthy opponent. They have faced each other twice before. Familiarity certainly will breed contempt. El Terrible should have taken a more cautious approach, but he did not. I guess he knew that after losing thirty pounds in weight, he could never last the distance. He had to end it early. Las Vegas was the best place to initiate a gambit. Both fighters traded bombs in the second canto. But as Erik Morales pressed his attack, he walked into Manny Pacquiao’s left hand. El Terrible crumbled like a sand castle pummeled by a tsunami. Whoever said that a southpaw should be drowned at birth was proven right once again. The Filipino pistolero smelled blood. In the third canto, punches rained from all angles with the rapid deadly efficiency of a machine gun. El Terrible fired back but he only had a six-shooter. It became a mismatch. It was short, quick, brutal and final. The Mexican’s gambit did not pay off. Like all great champions of the past, Morales went down swinging and finished on his back.
