Domingo battles Malinga today

The distance from Manila to Johannesburg is 11,041.2 kilometers or 6,860.7 miles. Flight time lasts more than fourteen hours. Michael "Bruce Lee" Domingo has waited longer than that to get a big fight.

In his eleventh year as a pro he got his first stint as a main event fighter last May in Cebu. Domingo?s fists of fury knocked out Luis Melendez of Colombia in the second round but shot at the world title continues to elude him. He has to travel halfway around the world for an eliminator bout for the IBF bantamweight top contender spot.

Trainer Edito Villamor e-mailed this writer yesterday that they will travel for more than three hours to get to the weigh-in in Mafikeng. ALA Promotions Public Relations head Chad Ca?ares wrote in his article that they even had vehicle problems along the way.

The long trip and the snags mirrored the events of Domingo's career;the early losses, having to endure fighting bigger opponents and languishing under the shadows of his more popular stablemates.

But the setbacks have made him stronger and more confident. Nothing beats experience, be it good or bad.

Domingo (40W (18 KO?s) -14L-2D) and Malinga (19W(12 KO?s) -3L-1D) both made weight yesterday. Malinga is gunning for a career turn around in this card appropriately titled REDEMPTION AT MAFIKENG. Aside from fighting in front of a friendly crowd, Malinga will have his long reach and southpaw stance as added advantage.

Their fight will happen a few hours after Domingo's stablemate AJ "Bazooka" Banal fights Luis "El Demoledor" Perez of Nicaragua at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, Cebu City.

During Wednesday's press conference, Domingo was asked regarding the origin of his moniker ?Bruce Lee? which was bestowed by a local sportswriter because of his abilities and quickness inside the ring. He also said that he has studied fight films of Malinga on the net.

There is always a certain degree of uncertainty when a boxer fights on the road. But for Domingo, it will be just another day at the office. He will have his past tribulations to thank for that.
