Can Dapudong Sting Mexico Again?

PhilBoxing.com

Three months after stunning Jesus Jimenez and the Mexican boxing fans with a first round knockout win on Mexican soil, Edrin ?The Sting? Dapudong will defend his WBC Silver flyweight title in Cancun against Mexican flyweight champion Wilbert ?Hurricane? Uicab.

The September 18 (Philippine Time) fight is billed as "Bicentenary Caribbean Rumble" in Mexico. In the Philippines, however, the fight is entitled ?The Rivalry II? referring to the ongoing boxing rivalry between the two countries.

Filipino boxers have lost more than they?ve won on Mexican soil this year; Bert Batawang (L RTD 6), Denver Cuello (L DQ 3), Richie Mepranum (L TKO 5), Richard Garcia (L KO 4),Rodel Mayol (L UD 12) Johnriel Casimero (L SD 12). and Ryan Bito (L KO 10).

Dapudong?s title defense comes one month after Donnie Nietes survived the sauna-like temperature of Guasave and defended his WBO minimumweight world title for the fourth time. Nietes has demonstrated that winning on the road by points is difficult but not impossible. In fact, he has done it three times already. A second stoppage win by Dapudong would be equally impressive.

The 25 year old Dapudong (20W-2L,11KO's) is already in Cancun. He has worked hard with trainer Noli Pi?ol and conditioning coach Justin Fortune. But the surprise factor will no longer be on the Filipino?s side. Team Uicab has obviously reviewed the tape of the Jimenez fight. Team Dapudong?s pre-fight preparation will be crucial.

Dapudong is ranked sixth in the WBC world ratings for the month of September. His ranking is also an added incentive for the 26 year old Uicab (29W- 5L-1D, 18 KO's) to win this fight and prevent another Filipino celebration in Mexico.
