THE DREAM CONTINUES

Z ?The Dream? Gorres was the recipient of the Presidential Award from Cebu sportswriters during the 28th SAC-SMB Cebu Sports Awards was held Thursday evening at the Casino Espa?ol de Cebu.

Gorres was accompanied by his wife, Datchess, trainer Edito Villamor, Boxing patron Antonio L. Aldeguer, Michael Aldeguer and Dennis Canete and stablemates Milan Melindo and WBO minimumweight champ Donnie Nietes.

Gorres was praised by the speakers for his courage and fighting spirit which lead to his miraculous recovery from emergency neurosurgery due to a subdural hematoma sustained in the last round of his fight with Luis Melendez of Colombia last November. Part of the evening?s ceremony was a video showing blown up photos taken by Cebu sports photographers of Gorres in action inside the ring as well as his memorable fights. Gorres? last fight in Cebu was in March 2009 when he stopped Roberto Leyva of Mexico in the 7th round at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug.

It was a very heart-tugging moment when Gorres stood up from his wheelchair and walked slowly towards the stage assisted by his wife Datchess. Gorres is still undergoing rehabilitation for residual neurologic deficits on his left side but his determination to recover has become a source of inspiration to us all.

Mr. Antonio Aldeguer was the guest speaker for the evening. He gave a touching speech about how he felt when Gorres hit the canvas with a few seconds remaining in the fight, when he stood up and waved the Filipino flag when he was declared the winner and the tragic loss of consciousness a few minutes later.

?I remembered the nine year old boy who cried after he finished his first sparring session,? Mr. Aldeguer said, ?He cried not because he was hurt but because he was told he was not good enough. He worked hard through the years until he was good enough. He is my champion.?

Gorres posed for pictures after the ceremonies. His dream lives on with his ALA stablemates like Melindo and Nietes who were also awarded for their ring accomplishments. His dream lives inside every Filipino child who puts on boxing gloves hoping that one day, he can also wave our flag on foreign soil.

The Sportswriters Association of Cebu ( SAC-SMB ) Sports Awards is an annual event, sponsored by San Miguel Beer, where athletes based in Cebu are given citations for their outstanding achievements at the national and international level. Z Gorres made last Thursday?s affair one of the more memorable ones.
