For the first time in the history of Philippine boxing, and fifty five (55) long years after the establishment of the Games and Amusements Board as an agency under the Office of the President by PD 871 and other relevant laws, our country will be hosting the "1st GAB Philippine Annual Boxing Convention".

This memorable event will take place this 18th-21st of April, 2006 at the Hotel Hyatt and Casino Manila as approved unanimously by the GAB incumbent Board headed by its dynamic Chairman Eric R.Buhain. Calendared as as a top priority of this administration, gargantuan preparations are now being made in order to ensure the success of the event and to secure a favorable outcome specifically for the future of our professional Filipino boxers and the nation's image as a country that nurtures world-class athletes.

Needless to mention the past and present world titles achieved by our great heroes of the ring, since the very glorious time of Pancho Villa, Flash Elorde down to the Pacman generation and counting.

This long-dreamed historic convention, truly a brainchild of Chairman Buhain will send the signal not only here among the active community of professional boxing but to the whole world, that our country's national leadership under Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is serious in its desire not only to enhance the development of boxing but elevate our nation's quest for continued excellence.

Though the task at hand seems so difficult, the GAB is now happy to inform the readers that we can do it thru partnership with other agencies.

The City of Manila under the able leadership of their chief executive the Honorable Mayor Lito Atienza, who is a big fan of boxing is now the co-partner of the agency.

Secretary Ace Durano of the Department of Tourism through Assistant Secretary Cynthia Carrion had accepted recently our offer for the DOT to have a mutual collaboration with GAB considering that this big event is a possible tourism magnet.

At this time, we are still finalizing many aspects of convention proper. And expectedly, foreign guests and delegates from the known sanctioning bodies in boxing will be arriving for the big event.

Jose Sulaiman Chagnon of the WBC, Gilberto Mendoza of the WBA, Paco Valcarcel of the WBO, Marian Muhammad of the IBF and to include their regional and Pan Asian, the Oriental and Pacific regional officers of these pro boxing conglomerations are expected to join the convention.

Awards and recognition will be given out to our Filipino world and national champions.Posthumous awards will also be given to the former Filipino world champions to be administered by the President of the Philippines as our guest of honor and speaker. We have yet to receive the confirmation from the Palace, particularly form the Office of the Honorable Executive Secretary Eduardo R.Ermita, the number one supporter of the agency, for Her Excellency's approval. Hundreds of local delegates from the ranks of big time promoters and managers, top referees and judges as well as the boxers themselves will convene for this occassion.

The GAB will also recognize some of the deserving promoters, referree and judges who in one way or another have paved the way for the development of professional boxing in the country. So by now, the whole agency is well focused to achieve the end goal and target of the convention. That is, showcasing to the world the best of our Filipino boxing potentials and at the same time create a sound program for our continued quest to acquire global excellence in the sport.

Of course, we need the untiring support of the private sector in this very laudable efforts for the benefit of our Filipino boxers. We owe it to the future generations of young and aspiring individuals who would want to follow in the footsteps of our champions today. We at the GAB are trying our very best not only for the sake of our duty to our constituency as mandated, but more importantly for the country.

We would like also to convey our request to our vigilant friends from the tri-media to do their share to help in the dissemination of information for us to maximize the chances for success of this first ever boxing convention.
