PHILIPPINES TO HOST WBC 2007 CONVENTION

Fri, 03 Feb 2006

Here's a piece of big news for the boxing community in the Philippines. The incumbent Board of Governors of the well-respected World Boxing Council and its entire directorate voted unanimously for the holding of its annual convention here in our country in the year 2007. This reliable information was relayed to this writer by Chairman Eric R. Buhain of the Games and Amusements Board from Cancun, Mexico.

It was during the WBC Night of the Champions last January 29th, attended by the good GAB Chairman, that the favorable nod was being approved. The bid made by the GAB through Buhain to host the WBC event was relayed to the WBC during the WBC's annual convention held in Cadiz, Spain last year. This development was most welcomed by the members of the board the GAB as well as its rank and file, taking into account the rigorous efforts exerted by Chairman Buhain who is a sitting member of the Board of Governors of this prestigious sanctioning body in boxing.

He told me that "Mabuhay talaga ang Pilipinas, 2006 and 2007 are years that the Philippines will give a strong signal in the boxing world." Be it noted that, hosting such a global event would mean a herculian task in matters of preparations, security, protocol and the financial requirements to be incurred. It's not that easy. But a snappy salute to Chairman Buhain for making it happen here next year. This will be a shot in the arm to our tourism industry also.

...............................................................

I was correct with my earlier analysis that the holding for the first time in history since 1951 the first ever "1st GAB Philippine Annual Boxing Convention" this coming 18-21 of April, 2006 will draw a positive impression from those foreign delegates that our country is more than capable to host future global meetings. We have the best and finest of hotels, tourism industry is alive and most of all Filipino great fighters of the ring are well respected in the global community. We are still hoping that, not only WBC in 2007 but even the oldest world boxing body, the World Boxing Association or the WBA, will also approve our bid to host its convention in the Philippines next year.

...............................................................

By the way, last Tuesday the controversial Jen Bautista, whom I regard as the "Lady Luck " and "Lucky Charm" to our Filipino champion Manny Pacquiao, arrived via PAL flight 103 at exactly 4:30 am at the NAIA. Well wishers included this writer, the proud father GAB Commissioner Angel P. Bautista, Kiwanis Club group of Imus, Cavite and the platoon of friends headed by Don Cenon Santarin and Jen's closest friends and relatives welcomed her with pride at the airport. We immediately paraded on board different types of vehicles in unison towards her native hometown in Imus, where the Honorable Mayor Homer Saquilayan and some local folks joyously waited for Jenny.

Jen, was the one who emotionally sung our national anthem during the much publicized rematch between Erik Morales and Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas, Nevada last January 22, 2006, a day that the whole nation became so proud of the Pacman's victory. What I really noticed of Jen is the fact that, she is the same Jen Bautista I used to know prior to her Las Vegas performance. She hasn't changed her attitude. And by this, I could sense that sooner or later, this very young and talented lass will rise and become one of our country's top professional performer as a singer. Jen, we wish you all the best of luck.

You are our "Lady Luck".
