CHAIRMAN BUHAIN: THE PHILIPPINES AS POSSIBLE VENUE OF WORLD BOXING COUNCIL 2007 WORLD CONVENTION

The Philippines' pride and former swimming sensation and former olympian Eric R.Buhain, who is now Chairman of the Games and Amusements Board is determined to win the bid for hosting for the first time the 2007 WBC annual world convention.

Buhain, as member of the Board of the WBC, announced before the GAB Board in its recent meeting the possibility of securing the approval of the WBC Board for the Philippines as the venue and host of its 2007 world conference. Buhain stated, "The Philippines is regarded as one of the oldest pillars of the WBC, since our country's role in the global community of boxing is even older than that of WBC's existence. As a matter of fact, our country has been awarded the miniature replica of the WBC championship title belt as a clear testimonial of their recognition to us."

The award was bestowed upon by the WBC in its recently-concluded convention held in La Linea de la Concepcion, Cadiz, Spain attended by Buhain this October 2nd-8th, 2005.

So with this, the GAB Board had unanimously approved a resolution to be sent to the WBC headquarters informing them of the interest and the decisive intention of this country to handle the WBC affairs by 2007. Once given the nod, this will provide a greater positive indication to the world that the Philippines through the GAB is really serious to develop and promote an atmosphere of a global Filipino boxing community.

Likewise, Buhain feels that a consortium between the Department of Tourism as well as other inter-related agencies of the national government may be possible to ensure the success of the convention. Buhain got the 100% support of the members of the GAB Board in this project as a way of not only developing a closer ties among the boxing nations of the world but somehow open an avenue for possible future investments and tourism.

INDONESIAN BPP-OPI TO VISIT GAB MANILA THIS NOVEMBER

What a welcome development for the Philippines to serve as the role model for our neighboring countries in the Southeast Asia in matters of handling the professional sports.

We felt honored in our agency as we received a letter from the Board of Development Control (BPP-OPI) Indonesian Professional Sports headed by their Executive Chairman Togi M. Hutagaol dated October 10, 2005 addressed to Chairman Eric R.Buhain of GAB, informing that their government will send a delegation to meet with the officials of our country's professional sports agency for purposes of comparative study and at the same time a coaching clinic. That means, we are regarded as having the best technical people in the field of regulating pro sports and the competence of our men involved.

We are expecting them to arrive in the Philippines within the month of November this year as communicated by their Executive Chairman. Hence, the Games and Amusements Board this time will have to ensure that the preparations as to the technical sessions, coaching techniques and methodology, basic skills and competent regulatory and supervisory aspects are among those things needed in order to give the Indonesian counterpart the good impression as to how the Philippines has ably managed the affairs of our professional sports in the global aspects of competitions.

We also would like to especially mention the untiring support extended to this agency by the Office of the President through our dynamic Executive Secretary Eduardo R. Ermita. With him and Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo the GAB is always on the go ...
