WAGA, BARDON WIN OPBF BELTS

March 18, 2007

NAGOYA, JAPAN -- Japanese prospect Toshikazu Waga (14-3, 5 KOs), 104.75, impressively acquired the vacant OPBF 105-pound belt by flattening OPBF#5 Chansaknoi Sakrungruang (6-6-1, 4 KOs), 105, with a well-timed right at 1:16 of the second round on Sunday in Nagoya, Japan.

Filipino champ Jojo Bardon (22-9-2, 9 KOs), 112, also won the vacant OPBF flyweight title by a split decision (115-113 twice and 113-116) over previously unbeaten Masaharu Naganawa (11-1-2, 2 KOs), 111.75, over twelve.

OPBF#4 super-fly Ryuichi Okahashi (14-2, 4 KOs), 117.5, sank Indonesian Aldo (9-3-1, 3 KOs), 117.25, with a countering right at 2:06 of the third round in a scheduled ten.

Unbeaten WBC#10 bantam Kohei Ohba (17-0-1, 10 KOs), 117.75, pounded out a unanimous decision (98-91, 98-92 and 99-92) over Thai national champ Kaonah Khlongphajon (17-14-1, 13 KOs), 117.5, over ten. Ohba had the Thailander on the deck in the fifth, and took the initiative almost all the way.

OPBF#3 feather Makyo (Masanori) Sugita (23-1-2, 15 KOs), 126, dispatched Thailander Runktawan Sor. Vorapin (15-10, 2 KOs), 125, with a solid straight right at 2:48 of the second round in the first ten.

Promoter: Hatanaka Promotions.

Matchmaker: Joe Koizumi.

EX-WBC 115LBS CHAMP TOKUYAMA RETIRES

March 18, 2007

OSAKA, JAPAN

Ex-WBC 115-pound champ Masamori Tokuyama, 32, officially submitted a letter of retirement to the Japan Boxing Commission on Thursday. Tokuyama, a slick-punching jabber, captured the WBC super-fly belt by upsetting Korean Injoo Cho on points in 2000, and kept it eight times before forfeiting his throne to Katsushige Kawashima by a shocking first round TKO in 2004. Tokuyama regained it by outmaneuvering his grudge rival Kawashima in their third encounter in the next year, and scored a successful defense against Jose Navarro by a unanimous nod in 2006. It was his last appearance. His overall record was 32-3-1, 8 KOs. Tokuyama was such a highly scientific boxer as hit without getting hit. He hopes to open his gym in the near future.

TAKEMOTO DEFEATS WBA#4 CABRERA

March 18, 2007

KOBE, JAPAN

Local favorite Zaiki Takemoto (21-6-1, 12 KOs), 127, surprisingly scored an upset six-round technical decision (58-55, 59-56 and 58-56) over WBA#4 featherweight Juan Cabrera (52-14-1-1NC), 126.5, in a scheduled tenner on Sunday in Kobe, Japan.

Takemoto was aggressive from the outset, while Cabrera gamely fought back with roundhouse shots. Though Cabrera attempted to maintain the pressure from the second, Takemoto effectively caught the Argentine with right counters to win points. The Japanese sustained a gash caused by an accidental butt in the fifth, and as his cut became deteriorated, a technical decision was taken midway in the next round.

Undercard:

Yasuki Takemoto (9-1-2, 3 KOs), 126.75, an elongated brother of the main eventer Zaiki, earned a majority decision over Japanese #4 ranked feather Yoshio Kojima (8-8-2, 2 KOs), 126.75, over ten.

Promoter: Senrima Kobe Promotions.

Matchmaker: Joe Koizumi (as for the Cabrera-Takemoto bout).

PARRA LOSES WBA FLY BELT ON THE SCALE

March 18, 2007

TOKYO, JAPAN

WBA flyweight champ Lorenzo Parra (27-0, 17 KOs), Venezuela, forfeited his belt on the scale, as he failed to make the 112-pound limit on Sunday in Tokyo, Japan. Japanese challenger Takefumi Sakata (29-4-1, 14 KOs) tipped the beam at 112, but Parra scaled in at 118 pounds at his first trip to the scale. In two hours Parra made his best effort to reduce his weight, but weighed in at 116.75 pounds to lose his belt. They are mandated to make the prefight weigh-in under 118 pounds at 5 pm tomorrow, four hours before the WBA title bout starts. Should Sakata win, he will become the legitimate WBA fly ruler. Should Parra win, the WBA interim champ Roberto Vasquez of Panama will elevate to the full champ. If Sakata should be victorious, he will be obliged to face Vasquez in his first defense.

The WBA officials are as follows: referee Guillermo Perez Pineda (Panama); judges Henk Meijers (Netherlands), John Poturaj (US) and Ferdinand Estrella (Philippines); and WBA supervisor Noa Reandeau (US).
