MONTIEL FIGHT ON ‘THE MAIN EVENT’

In order to give Filipino boxing fans an idea of what kind of a fighter Fernando Montiel is, Viva Sports top-rated weekly boxing show “The Main Event” will telecast highlights of Montiel’s battle for the then vacant WBO super flyweight title against Pedro Alcazar of Panama at 2:00 p.m. Sunday over RPN 9.
The fight took place on June 22, 2002 when Montiel moved up in weight to fight for the vacant 115 pound title against Alcazar who was, like Montiel, undefeated.
Two days after the fight Alcazar unfortunately passed away due to a brain injury that was apparently undetected before he entered the ring.
Montiel who arrived in Cebu today faces the flashy Filipino southpaw Z “The Dream” Gorres, the mandatory challenger on February 24 at the Cebu City Sports Complex.
Meantime, Colombian Feider Viloria who is scheduled to face emerging ring sensation Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista in a WBO Intercontinental super bantamweight title fight was unable to leave Bogota as scheduled and is now expected to arrive in Cebu on Tuesday afternoon.
