AMONSOT WINS, BUT MELLIGEN LOSES IN KOREA
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sat, 10 Feb 2007
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA--Two Filipino fighters suffered contrasting fates here in their bid to win the WBO Asia Pacific titles against their Korean counterparts.
ALA Boy Czar Amonsot took the WBO Asia Pacific lightweight title with a split decision victory over Korean lightweight champ Daun Chung.
Two judges saw the fight for Amonsot, while the Korean judge, apparently needing a deserved visit to the opthamologist, had his compatriot winning the fight.
"It was actually a one-sided fight, although exciting," said WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo.
Judges Salven Lagumbay and Bruce McTavish saw it for Amonsot 119-109 and 115-113 respectively.
The Korean started bleeding from his nose starting in the opening round, and had a swollen left eye all throughout.
The Tagbilaran City-raised Amonsot, who credited the mouthpiece made for him by Dr. Ed De la Vega, was brilliant all throughout, except in rounds two and ninth when the Korean was busier.
The win improved Amonsot's record to 18 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw with 10 KO's.
Melligen Stopped in 8th
Former amateur standout Mark Jason Melligen tasted his first pro defeat with a shock technical knockout loss in the eighth round at the hands of Korean light-welter champ Yong Sung Kim despite leading on points.
Melligen lost steam starting in the fifth, and was visibly cathing his breath before going down three times after absorbing body shots from the on-rushing Korean.
"This loss will serve as a big lesson for Melligen. He was brilliantly outboxing his foe in the earlier rounds, but lost stamina. I will try to work out a rematch," said Panoncillo, who indicated Melligen can even become a world champ if he only develops his stamina.
The loss was Melligen's first in seven fights.
