MORE BOXING PROMOTIONS FOR 2007 By Alex A. Paglumotan, GAB Commissioner PhilBoxing.com Mon, 29 Jan 2007 I was in Tokyo, Japan the other week where I met Cebu's top boxing manager and promoter and close partner to the famous ALA Gym of Antonio L. Aldeguer, Sammy Gello-ani. Inside the famous Korakuen Hall, the "Don King" of the Visayas had a lengthy conversation with this writer on the spotlight of professional boxing promotions coming our way this year 2007, the "Year of the Fire Pig" or the "Boar" under the Chinese calendar. Our topics were very interesting and all have been focused to the GAB as an agency and the role of the people behind boxing communities towards national glory and reputation. And before I forget, I have to mention these topnotch Filipino world class fighters, Gerry Penalosa and Rodel Mayol who were there also to assist Malcolm Tunacao, Jury Noda, Michael Domingo and others who were drafted in the All-Filipino -All Japanese Friendship fight cards which was promoted by the group of Yasuo Matsuoka. Unfortunately, Tunacao lost his OPBF title to another Filipino trained in Japan Rolly Lunas. Now going back to the main topic of our conversation. You know I was so very impressed with some tough guys in the boxing scene whose interest and concern is not only business nor profit in boxing, but the very essence of bringing our champion pugs into the pedestal of their ambitions. Yes, we have to admit that there are some who engaged themselves because they've realized that boxing is not only an adventure nor simple sport so to speak, but a lucrative endeavour to be involved into. But I saw in the eyes of Gello-ani the love and passion in this leading sport. Perhaps the 2 degrees temperature in Tokyo that time had driven us to stay a longer time inside the hall and had the opportunity to talk a lot better. Gello-ani appreciated in behalf of boxing managers and promoters the efforts and the achieving desire of the GAB through the leadership of Chairman Eric R.Buhain in promoting various aspects of innovations in the agency for the entire benefit of the boxing community in the country. The remarkable achievements and the resounding victories we have had these previous years, courtesy of our pro boxers, is a manifestation of our solid commitment to uplift the plight of each and every individual in the sport. We also tackled the basic issue of boxers scanning, the financial requirements as well as the status of the payments to be made for the ring officials officiating every conduct of the fights. With openness and kind acceptance of circumstances and the limitations in every capacities that we have to exercise, Gello-ani was very receptive and reasonable in his dealings with this representation. So we talked about promotions to be made within the framework of 2007. Taking -off next month are boxing promotions from all over the country. On the line we have the WBO superflyweight title bout in Cebu City featuring Z Gorres and Boom-Boom Bautista, the Cagayan de Oro promotion of Leonil Lazarito on the 16th of February, the PABA title defense of Dennis Laurente on February 17th in Manila City accdording to Johnny Elorde and the Baguio City series of boxing promotions by Raffy Panagan. In Bacolod City, once finalized, Mayor Bing Leonardia will have also one either in the city's plaza or Golden fields complex and another one in Victorias City, Negros Occidental by the ALA people with Ilonggo Tony Aldeguer, Sammy Gello-ani and Former Vice-Mayor of Bacolod Monju Guanzon. And Gello-ani told me also that the evolution of female boxers in the Philippines is about to begin as stables all over the country are now preparing to launch for massive female fight competitions nationwide. This is another era in this leading sport that the GAB had pioneered through a policy that we approved since early last year. In putting all these things into their proper perspectives , we want not only prosperity in professional boxing but also unity.I believed in Gello-ani's words that "we have achieved a series of glamour and glories abroad, all we need to acquire is the global respect by other countries to the Filipinos in matters of professional boxing." Very well said. More promotions either big or small as long as we have the best chances of pulling the greatest potentials of our younger generations in boxing the better for us. We in the GAB in fullfilling our solid thrust and commitment to put our country in the forefront of global competition, are in support of every effort in professional sports development.
