OPBF King Suico takes on Igarashi in Tokyo!
PhilBoxing.com Tue, 19 Dec 2006
Reigning Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) lightweight champion Randy Suico is set to take on Japanese Kei Igarashi in a non-title, 10-round slugfest on January 20 at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
The 27-year-old Suico is hoping to earn yet another crack at a world title following the setback he suffered at the hands of WBA lightweight champ Juan Diaz last July 15.
A victory over Igarashi (16-4-2, 2 KO's) is expected to improve Suico's world rankings, and line him up for yet another world title try.
The Mandaue City-raised hard puncher is currently ranked WBC no. 8 and WBA no. 12 lightweight, and parades a record of 25 wins, 3 losses with 22 KO's.
Suico is currently in Japan serving as chief sparmate to WBA super-featherweight king Edwin Valero, one of the few names being floated around as possible foes for superstar Manny Pacquiao.
The hard-punching Valero, a Venezuelan now living in Japan, will defend his WBA title against Mexican Michael Lozada on January 3 also in Tokyo.
Reports coming out of Japan reveal that Suico was a bit sluggish during the first few days of sparring with Valero, but recovered well in the next weeks to engage Valero in torrid exchanges at Akihiko Honda's Teiken Gym.
"Gi-bunal-bunalan og maayo ni Randy si Valero. Pirting dagan. Mas kusog gud si Randy ni Valero. Pero maayo gyud pod nuon si Valero," (Randy unleashed his wrath on Valero, who moved a lot. Randy has more power, but Valero is really good), said a source who was able to watch most of the sparring sessions.
