Exclusive: Jim Lampley Talks About Manny Pacquiao

PhilBoxing.com

Editor's note: Arkansas-based Anthony "Duljoman" Andales caught up with HBO's Jim Lampley during the Taylor vs Ouma weigh-in yesterday. The following is their conversation.

Duljoman: Do you think this fight would be a better fight or entertaining compared to the 3 previous fight of JT?

Lampley: This would be a way more entertaining fight compared to the Wright and Hopkins fight, solely because Kasim Ouma is here to throw 120 punches per round and that kind of non stop action is what the fight fans would want to see.

Jim Lampley (left) poses with Anthony "Duljoman" Andales at yesterday's Taylor vs Ouma weigh-in at Alltel Arena in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Duljoman: So, who do you think will win the fight?

Lampley: Will this is high contact fight, this a fight in which there will be a lots of punches landed... so the bigger, stronger man definitely has an advantage in a fight like that. I have to favor Jermain Taylor against Kasim Ouma, he's significantly larger.

Duljoman: Going back to Manny Pacquiao, how do you rate him pound for pound?

Lampley: I rate at this moment, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, EVEN, they're together 1A and 1A, no difference between the two who is the number one fighter of the world. Whether you like FM style great boxer great defensive skills or you like MP style all out violence knockout on the table, I think that most fans prefer that. But in terms of their skills of what they're accomplishing, what the sports need right now, they're co-number one.

Duljoman: Do you think Morales was on his best shape when fought Manny?

Lampley: No, look, Erik Morales is way on the downside. He's had more big wars, more horindous rounds, more intense fights, than anybody else in this sport. And he don't go through all that and quest to make weight as many times as he has crashed to make weights, without incurring significant damage. So their is just isn't much of Erik Morales as it was the case before. So, now he got himself into shape for the fight, and he landed big punches. I saw him land 2, 3 solid right hands in the second round. The punches he wanted to land and then he walk right through then. And therefore when the real rains start falling on the third round that wasn't surprise, when Erik after the second knockdown, decided that the better part of the valor would be to sit still.

Duljoman: Erik is planning to surpass Julio Caesar Chaves to be a 4 time champion in 4 different weight classes. What would be Erik's chances?

Lampley: Erik tried 135 before and he was outboxed by Raheem, fighting Joel Casamayor would be more difficult for him coz Joel is more skillful compared to Raheem.

Duljoman: With Erik conditioning for Grand Finale, do you think he will win if he ever fought other guys instead of Manny, like JMM and MB?

Lampley: I think yes. Morales could still give Marquez or Barrera a good fight, he might even find a way to be in the fight down the stretch. But at the end of the day, I'm not sure why Morales would fight again. He's made a great deal of money, anything he does from this point forward is gonna be less than what he has done up to this point, unless there's some specific need for which he needs money.

Duljoman: Are you going if Pacquiao fight in Macau?

Lampley: I hope its gonna be on HBO, I would love to go, but if its Showtime, I'd surely watch it at home. There's nothing more exciting than to watch 2 of the most exciting fighters in the world right now in one ring. And I think its more exciting than Barrera-Pacquiao, but I'd love to see Barrera-Pacquiao happening next year. No reason in the world why there will be no Pacquiao-Barrera rematch, they should fight, last chance for the great Mexican fighter like Barerra to redeem himself. But I would say Pacquiao would be the more stronger fighter. No excuses this time.

Duljoman: Thanks for your time Jim. See you tomorrow.

Lampley: Thank you, thank you.
