Diaz and Suico Easily Tip the Scales, So Did Mosley and Vargas

PhilBoxing.com

La Vegas, NV - Houston, Texas native, Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz, the WBO lightweight champion and his challenger, Randy “Komong Bato” Suico, the pride of Mandawe City, Cebu easily covered the required weight limitation during the official weigh-in held a few minutes ago today for all the combatants involved in the “Mosley-Vargas- The Rematch”. The fight card which is billed as a whole night “slam-bang” affair is a promotion the Golden Boy Promotions of Oscar de la Hoya. It is scheduled to be held tomorrow, Saturday, July 15, 2006 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in the heart of “The Strip” in Las Vegas. The first fight on the card is booked at 4:00 PM . The main event featuring two of California’s best light middleweights, Shane Mosley of Pomona and Fernando Vargas of Oxnard, is set to start around 7:30 PM on prime time HBO PPV. The Suico-Diaz fight is the main supporting event for the Mosley-Vargas rematch and will also be shown on PPV.

Diaz, the undefeated 22-year old champion who sports a 29-0 (14 KO) record came in at a sizzling 135 lbs. Suico, 24-2-0 (21 KO) the Japanese-managed (Joe Koizumi), Filipino-trained (Juanito Ablaca) slugger who also answers to another moniker, “Golden Boy,” weigh in exactly the same, 135 lbs.

Being the champion, Diaz came in first for the weigh-in. He stepped on the scales and had no trouble at all making the limit. Then came Suico’s turn. Suico walked in to the room sporting a nice blue and white warm-up suit and brand new white athletic shoes. He strip down, stepped on the scales and just like that, tipped the scales also at 135 lbs.

Following the procedure, both fighters were asked to do the obligatory photo-op with the throng of photo-journalist who shot from their assigned spots in front of the scales.

All the fighters in the card, including Mosley and Vargas had no trouble making the weigh limits. Vargas was first to weigh in upon request of his Team. He hit the scales at 154 lbs.
Vargas appeared serious and all business like. Mosley, then followed. He weigh-in at 153 lbs.Unlike Vargas, Mosley appeared loose and relaxed.

Two other fighters of interest to the Filipinos because they are potential opponents for Rey “BoomBoom” Bautista, WBA bantamweight champ Daniel Ponce de Leon cxame in at exactly 118 lbs. His challenger, Sod Looknongyangtov was however, 2 lbs over at 124 lbs. The fight officials gave him two hours to shed the extra baggage. Eventually, I am sure he will make the weight. But will he be strong enough?
