Pacquiao mauls two Russian sparmates!
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Wed, 31 May 2006
Looking well ahead in training schedule, Manny Pacquiao silenced his critics who say he's cramming in training, as he bloodied two Russian sparmates yesterday at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles in preparation for his July 2 showdown with Oscar Larios at the Araneta Coliseum.
Seeing action in his second four-round sparring session, Pacquiao impressed trainer Freddie Roach when he rocked Russians Rustom Nugaev and Vlademir Zykov into a bloody mess as he now aims to step up into his first 6-round session on Friday.
"I think he is getting better and better," said Filipino manager Rex 'Wakee' Salud, who was at ringside to watch the sparring sessions in Los Angeles.
Roach, in an interview with Boxingtalk, also hinted that he was impressed with Pacquiao's timing this early in his preparation, and informed that when Pacquiao works the heavy bags and mitts, he does it with bad intentions and everyone in the gym stops their activities just to watch.
Roach also added that he has decided to scrap Pacquiao's planned training in Baguio City, citing too many adjustments that will be made to go up the mountains. Instead, Roach revealed that Pacquiao and his team will fly back to the Philippines on June 20 and spend the remaining 11 days of training at the Wild Card Gym in Manila.
Larios, for his part, will fly to Japan within the next few days to acclimatize to Manila weather and train for one month at Tokyo's Teiken Gym before heading to the Philippines a few days before the fight.
Larios, according to sources, will spar against Japanese fighters belonging to the camp of Japanese impresario Akihiko Honda.
